Wave to me if I can't get it, I still want to get it

Before I read any reviews, I'm going to write down my feelings. In the beginning, Catherine married Zu, had other lovers, and then fell in love with Zhan. I thought Catherine was not a female character, but a symbol; but then, she and Zu married and broke up, repeatedly, tortured Zu Hezhan, I think she is like Satan or Siren, seduces and throws it away, gets it and throws it away, pursues free love, and learns to live to satisfy herself. I don't know if Zu and Zhan were female and Katherine was male, I would still think she looked like a devil, but I would still hope for Zu or Zhan to be a better story.

Before watching this movie, I saw comments about different moral values, so I tried to dismiss my moral evaluations as much as possible while watching the movie. I look at the "love" in this film from the point of view of doubting whether love is between two people and whether it requires loyalty, and in reality these issues were unquestionable to me before.

This movie made me want to write a review for the first time, and I would watch the movie again, read the script, and I would keep changing the words until I felt like I articulated how I felt about the movie.

I'm not going to say something like "give a star for Jeanne Morro", after all, this movie has two hours of stupid talk.

8/10. Truffaut has assembled the fancy forms of the New Wave's signature: smooth camera movement, condensing mirrors, overprints, cover changes, and flowing close-ups, conveying a wild and irresponsible atmosphere. The most amazing thing is that the film captures Catherine’s mysterious and capricious image like a statue slide. When Catherine comes on stage, the side and front shots show that Juul and Jim are shocked by the beauty of her statue, and then use fire and The image of water enhances her destructiveness. She always does things beyond the control of others. She carries sulfur, burns letters in a brazier, and unfortunately lit her skirt to symbolize the risk of experiencing passion. She is eager to run and pretend to be a man with fire and cigarettes. The heart is strong and the joy of breaking the gender identity. When the movie theater came out, Juul and Jim tried to challenge her aggressiveness. They were on the top of the steps in the composition, looking up at Catherine who was walking in front. The quick comment switched to Catherine. The sound and picture opposition at this moment metaphors the power confrontation between the sexes, and then Catherine calmly jumped into the cold water, just like her final ending, the cold water represents the tragedy made by unconstrained.

Jules and Jim quotes

Catherine: Sulfuric acid, for the eyes of men who tell lies.

  • Récitant: Catherine's plunge into the river so astonished Jim that he drew it the next day, though he didn't usually draw. Admiration for Catherine welled up in him and he sent her a kiss in his mind.
