It was the first time I saw Andrea's film, and she should be a director with a strong personal style. I might have liked this movie in the past, as much as I liked Trainspotting and The Basement, and I found that freedom of indulgence fascinating. Now that I understand what this freedom is, its magic is gone. It's nothing but restlessness, loss, suffocation, hormones, and the "freedom" they bring to do whatever it takes to burn oneself and hurt others. The protagonists are nothing more than a group of panicked lambs, not free. The film itself: The main story of this film is loose, but the atmosphere is unified. The director didn't want to tell a story at first, she just wanted to convey a state of life. This kind of movie is very atmospheric. The use of the camera, the color, the performance, the soundtrack, the state it conveys, it all has to be beautiful in order to retain the audience. American Beauty does a decent job at this, but it's not terrific.
