I promised my friend to write the afterthought of this drama, really digging a hole for myself. This show is really hard to write. There are so many things involved, and my knowledge of Christianity is not enough to support a well-structured text. So just add it slowly, and write it wherever you want.
How to understand the Pope's initial sermon
The theme should be anger .
"I'm just a trivial servant of God who accidentally became the Pope in a stupid competition of interests. But I know I'm nothing. What's there to see you people coming all the way to see me in high spirits? What do I have to say to you? There is nothing! What you should really admire and seek is God, not me! You hope for the protection of the gods, but you forget to serve; you work hard to follow the saints, but you do not want to Seek the truth for yourself. What can I tell you, I'm working hard to find it myself!"
This is not the original text of the sermon, but my understanding of the original text of the sermon.
The origin of this anger is clearly revealed in the film by the guard's wife, Esther.
His anger stems from his piety. And his sincerity and humility to serve was despised.
Lenny's sermon itself should not have a particularly deep meaning. It is purely that after a young man suddenly ascended to a high position, he could not organize the forces around him in a timely and effective manner. People who trust can't help or are unwilling to help, and people who are willing to help can't believe - It ended up being fun. Just because the Pope gave the impression of being mysterious and controlling everything before, it is easier to be confused and think that there is a deep meaning behind his words. But the plot arrangement itself is meaningful.
Lenny is angry. Because he has not yet become a real pope. He was elected Pope, but is still facing the changes around him with the attitude of the faithful. The pope's electoral overshoot was full of intrigue and exchange of interests, including his mentor. He sees no piety, only a bunch of hypocritical politicians. After he became Pope, he still regarded these people as a bunch of hypocritical politicians.
This is already the case with the clergy, but what about the rest of the church?
They happily came to the Vatican, to listen to the new Pope's sermons, and to look at Lenny's grace. So should Lenny be happy about it?
of course not.
Because it is likely that the proud Spencer was elected, and it is likely that the old and cunning Voiello was elected. If something like that happened, these congregations would still happily listen to their sermons and follow their teachings.
Lenny's efforts to become Pope were driven by distaste for these clergy. And because of his disgust with these people, Lenny was further disgusted with the worship of the Pope and the image of the Pope. Moreover, these are indeed problematic from a doctrinal point of view. I worked so hard that even the Pope was elected, but I was still confused about my faith. And these congregations actually thought that following the Pope could easily teach them. How can there be such a cheap thing in the world!
What you should seek is clearly in the sky. Why are you coming to the Vatican?
So in the end Lenny chose to hide his face, and after doing a sermon like a child's play to vent his anger, he worked hard to reform Catholicism.
As mentioned before, Lenny's anger at this time stems from the standard position of a devout believer. Although he survived the initial crisis after taking office with his superhuman intelligence, he was unable to position himself as a pope at once. He needs the powerful help of the church to accomplish his ambitions, and he still has a lot to learn.
So his initial reforms were almost certain to fail.
