A room with a view was adopted from a novel written by EM Forster .Set in a transition period from Victorian era to Edwardian era , it tells a romantic story happened to a beautiful middle-class lady called Lucy . It not only shows the charming European scenery——Italian classical architecture and English pastoral landscape , but also brings a kind of unique flavor of the Victorian times through actor's costumes and talks, their life styles and so on .

When I first watched this movie , its seemingly dull and boring plots nearly made me fall asleep because of cultural differences : not knowing the different social status of hero and heroine and English people's Victorian values , I had no idea why the heroine Lucy couldn't follow her heart to pursue true love but to be so hypocritical to deceive everyone claiming that she didn't like George at all .

Until now , I begin to understand it is the traditional secular views that kidnapped her and pushed her to accept “proper marriage” arranged by her mother , and such views also repressed her affection buried deep in heart . Her cousin Charlotte stands for this traditional force : at first , she nipped their love in the bud —upon discovering that Gorge kissed Lucy in the field , she took her back to England out of “Guardian duty”. In her eyes , Mr Emerson and his son were odd , vulgar people , she showed contempt to them and insisted refusing Emerson' s enthusiastic offer of a room with a view .

As a result of sense of hierarchy , which has a profound influence on British people , Lucy had to reject George and marry another man Cecil from higherclass . Cecil , a specimen of so-called gentleman , worn glasses , held stick , always with a book in hand and never stopped talking about music and art to show his knowledge and elegant taste . But in my opinion , he had a rather empty brain , and he justwrap himself up with music and art . Henever had a heart-talk with Lucy , not alone knew Lucy well . The most ridiculous thing is that in the garden Cecil asked Lucy if he could kiss her , and after getting permission , he looked around appearing rather timid . Then his glassed fell down to break down this kiss embarrassingly . While Gorge was such anenergetic young boy: he could climb the tree and shouted “Beauty , truth , love ” as he liked;he could come to to Lucy straightly and holdherin his arms ; he could play in the lake all naked like a child .

Lucy and George were so alike , because they both had passion towards life . Despite Lucy was always behaved delicate as a lady , when she played piano , Beethoven's music revealed her passionate soul . There is no doubt she was enamored of the latter , but she pretended disliking him ,and appearing restrained and indifferent to hide her true feelings .

But as George told Lucy what kind of person Cecil was: “He wants you for a possession, something to look at, like a painting or an ivory box. Something to own and to display. He doesn't want you to be real, and to think and to live. He doesn't love you . “ Women at that time were just regarded addition of their husband , and their marriage should be proper ——couple should match each other in aspects of social status and property .

Luckily , Lucy was moved by Mr Emerson and she ceased lying and began to face herself bravely . In the end of the film , Lucy and George traveled to Italy and came back to the room with a view again , where they fell in love with each other . Lucy eventually got her liberty and freedom as a maid and she could love one person freely enjoying Italianwarm climate , old sculpture and free air . And in such a beautiful place ,our heroine also welcomed her renaissance ——she realized her personality , and she dared to rebel arranged marriage and escaped from the chains of traditional values .
