Pornography in a client's lacquer box

There is one scene in the film that is most famous and is mentioned again and again by everyone who has seen it; but in this scene we actually see nothing and understand nothing. A client brought a small lacquer box, and he opened the lid to show the contents of the box to the other prostitute first, and then to Severina. As spectators, we never knew what was in the box, only a gentle humming sound came from the box. The first prostitute refuses to fulfill the client's mysterious request. Severina also refused, but then the scene cuts very ambiguous, and the ensuing scene suggests that something may have happened to us. What's in the box? The literal truth doesn't matter, it's the symbolic truth, that the box contains something extremely erotic for the client; that truth is what Buñuel is concerned with.

The erotic films of the period in France always wore a gray dress of anguish, and under the depressive atmosphere was endless torture of reality. But its pioneering character (including SM plot) is still terrifying today. Discussions beyond marriage and sex probably will never stop as long as there are human beings. The cold light from Deneuve's deep eye sockets really turned all sentient beings upside down.

Metaphors and critiques are hidden under Daytime Beauty's dreams. I don't know why I feel so sad after watching this movie. Probably because I have the same deep obsessional tendency as the heroine. The so-called involuntarily is just putting a pure motive on my ugly behavior.

Belle de Jour quotes

  • Henri Husson: You should see a specialist about your obsessions.

Renee: He's rich and idle. Those are his two main illnesses.

Henri Husson: Don't forget the hunt. I also have a special weakness for the poor. I think of them when it snows, with no fur coats, no hope, no nothing.

  • Pierre Serizy: [referring to Husson] I like him. He's amusing.

    Séverine Serizy: He's strange.

    Renee: Worse than that.
