"Mirror" has a stage significance in Tarkovsky's creative career. The film is considered a model of Soviet "author's film". The themes of the film are directly linked to the author's memories, the fate of the author's mother and other loved ones, and the author's sense of being a part of human history.
The structure of The Mirror, especially the structure of time, looks a lot like a kaleidoscope. The multicolored glass in the tube is refracted and transformed into a new combination of strange patterns. Tarkovsky assembled the scattered fragments in reality and memory into a unified whole, like a mosaic composed of glass pieces of different colors and shapes.
