A little personal thought...

The whole film has a neat structure, and the number of times the meaning of apple echoes is just right. Inheritance and transformation do not make people feel deliberate, and the subject matter focuses on middle-aged women: mothers, birth attendants, daughters, sisters. It also resonated with me, a 20-year-old woman.

Every turn is almost predictable, but not boring. The whole film is two hours and seven minutes. It can be said to be procrastinating, or it can be said that the director's long shot wants us to feel the kind of depression and aggrieved. Several times the tears will not let the tears flow out, and the atmosphere rendering is well balanced.

The ending of the trial was as expected, and the final half-open happy ending also gave a proper blank, so as not to worry about where Lucy came from, and there is room to imagine the later happy life of the protagonist Martha. I like it, very moved.

Powerful long shots, well-designed scheduling, a large number of close-ups and partial close-ups of the heroine, under the delicate shell created by technology, the characters' inner development and changes, the relationship with her husband, the relationship with her mother, and her inner self. There are only one fragment and plot point, and it does not well support the core of the story. This made the film seem superficial, and the actors' performances became a show of acting skills. The cliché design of plot points and the constantly appearing blunt metaphors form a separation from the film's exquisite technique and temperament. The final court scene did not achieve the strength it should have, and was completely discouraged under a smile. Can never empathize.

Pieces of a Woman quotes

  • Elizabeth: And I'm ashamed of me. That I wasn't a good enough mother to teach you how to stand up and speak for yourself, for God's sakes. And to deal with this. Like my mother taught me. After my father went into the ghetto, my mother found a shack, an empty shack, that she went into and gave birth to me. Without any help at all. She stashed me under the floorboards when she had to go out and steal food. So she could make milk enough to keep me alive, but just alive. Not strong enough to cry, or we'd be caught. When she finally got me to a doctor, he advised her to just let me go. That I wasn't... I wasn't strong enough to survive. But when she absolutely insisted, he picked me up by my feet and held me up like a chicken and said, "If she tries to lift her head, then there's hope." And you know what I did, Martha? I lifted my head. That's what I'm asking you to do now. Lift your head and fight for yourself, for God's sakes! Go out there and face that woman.

  • Lane: Yes, how did you feel holding your baby you had just given birth to?

Martha: She smelled like an apple.
