two veronica

One in Paris and one in Poland.

Similar appearance, age, lifestyle. They didn't know each other and didn't know each other's existence. Veronica from Poland has a beautiful voice, but she has a heart problem. At the climax of her first concert, she collapsed and died. At that moment, the other Veronica, suddenly lost something, felt sad, and unprecedented loneliness. "Suddenly become alone though nothing has changed".

By chance, she saw a puppet show, a girl with butterfly wings fell down and died, and another identical puppet appeared on the stage. After that, mysterious gifts continued to be given to her: photos and relics of the dead Veronica. In Paris, she was bewildered but not surprised, and had always felt weird. "I don't think I am alone, there is more than one me in the world".

Veronica from Paris went to Poland for a tour. In the square, she saw another self. Just a glimpse, nothing happened, nothing was said. Later in the photo she took, she saw her, Veronica of Poland, standing on the square and watching her.

Puppets are fragile and break easily. So I always do two exactly the same. The puppet artist said so. So is Veronica also a puppet in the hands of God? Two different lives are actually one soul. Maybe one is a complement to the other, maybe a different possibility in life. If she was born in Paris, she was like this; if she was born in Poland, it was another way.

Is there another me in this world? exactly like me? I know, there is. Each of us has it. That other me, just another me, was abandoned by me. Because I can only choose one life.

abandon, choose.

The abandoned self died, and the self who survived would feel inexplicably heart-wrenching pain. Feeling a dull pain but don't know why. The other self disappears for the sake of surviving, so we feel lonely from time to time.

The Double Life of Véronique quotes

  • Weronika: Is that me?

Alexandre Fabbri: Of course it's you.

    Weronika: Why two?

Alexandre Fabbri: Because during performances I handle them a lot. They damage easily.

  • Alexandre Fabbri: [kissing Veronique's forehead when she's lying upside down on his bed] Let's check and see if we're still bad for each other.
