"The Sinner" has only one character (police dispatcher), one scene (police dispatch center), and one dramatic action (answering the phone). The bold and extreme sense of form has no dazzling elements at all, but brings a more tense and suspenseful dramatic effect.
The form of the movie may be reminiscent of "Sniper Phone Booth". In contrast, the person in "Sniper Phone Booth" is "pretending to be confused", and he is led by the "murderer" on the phone to tell the truth a little bit.
