The first time I watched a Turkish movie, I came across the boring 3 hours and 16 minutes "Hibernation".
Aiden, a retired actor, inherited his ancestral family hotel almost in the wasteland. At this moment, it is the middle of winter again, and the curtain of "Hibernation" is slowly opening in this scene. There are less than 10 actors who have lines, and the characters they play in the play sometimes talk on the barren snowy ground. Most of the time they go to various indoor scenes to start a lengthy debate. At this time, the director usually uses a long-shot screen expression. Deliberately, so the dullness becomes duller.
In the first hour of watching, I was horrified by director Nuri Bilge Ceylan's "self-righteousness": on the screen they were always stuck there chattering by the director, how could the director believe that his "Hibernation" would hold Audiences overwhelmed by the noise of fast-paced life? He won. The fact that the film won the Palme d'Or is a testament to that, and "Hibernation" has been widely acclaimed locally and is a bigger win for Ceylon.
In the hearts of people who don't know Turkey, this country spanning Europe and Asia has a famous building in Istanbul, the Blue Mosque, which is also a mosque and a Catholic church. We don't know anything about it, and we assume subjectively that it is a country that is much worse than ours. "Hibernation" tells us how terrifying our prejudices are. While Turkish director Nuri Big Ceylan spends enough time and space to explore metaphysical confusion, our films are increasingly looking down the road. Comparing the endless crappy films with "Hibernation", not only do we not have the qualifications to be proud, but I am afraid that we will be ashamed of the very noble art of film.
In the second hour of the film, I have completely adapted to the rhythm of "Hibernation" and started to follow the rhythm of the characters in the film.
The film presents three contradictions, one between the hero Aiden and the tenant. Aiden leased the land to farmers and charged them rent, which was right and proper. And the farmers, busy from day to night and still so poor that they can't pay the rent, hated Aiden. A child from a poor family smashed the glass of Aiden's car with a large stone, to help his parents complain about their grievances, but isn't Aiden aggrieved?
The second pair of contradictions arises between Aiden and his sister who is divorced and returned home. The younger sister who spends her boring time lying on the sofa all day long, but also the elder brother who is scornful and busy. It is pointless to write a column, and the "History of Turkish Drama" will never be finished. I like to talk about it. Aiden, of course, has to plead.
The third pair of contradictions is between Aiden and his young wife Nihal. Nihal, who admired Aiden and married him, only found out after becoming Aiden's wife that she was an unbearable man who was arrogant, subjective, stingy, and miserable. Now that the flower of love has withered, Nihal wanted to do something meaningful to enrich herself. She chose charity, but was ruthlessly attacked by her husband. Just as the two are arguing about how to do charity, Aiden is on his way to Istanbul and intends to consider divorcing Nihal, but Nihal encounters a bizarre thing, and the climax of the film. , came in the last 30 minutes of the expression of the extended shot of the dialogue.
After a heated argument with his wife Niha, Aiden returned to Istanbul after leaving her a thick stack of banknotes in the name of charity. Nihal took the money to the family that was too poor to pay the rent. The boy of this family smashed the car glass, which required 170 yuan to repair, which is an astronomical sum for this family. The man of the house had just come out of prison and his life was still in decline, but after expressing an impassioned outrage, he threw the thick stack of 100-yuan bills that Nihal handed him into the fire.
Watching the banknotes turn to ashes in the fire, Nihar burst into tears.
Why is Nihal crying? Nihar, who has never been short of money, will not cry for losing the banknotes, that is to say, the burning banknotes look like a stack of banknotes, but it is all that Nihar wants to win from Aiden. The rude tenant ruined the dignity that Nihal felt he had gained. Therefore, on the way home, Nihal was crying. When she returned home and looked through the window at the white land and the fluttering snow, she felt Still crying.
At this moment, Aydin, who was unable to go to Istanbul due to the heavy snow blocking the road, came back. In the cold winter, the husband and wife look at each other through the window, and their expressions are so indifferent. The 3 hours and 16 minutes of the movie came to an abrupt end.
Keep me awake that night.
