hibernating heart

Ceylon got my attention starting with The Three Monkeys, a Kafkaesque film that won me over. Then I watched a few of his films, but none of them seemed to surpass or reach the level of "Three Monkeys". Now "Hibernation" allows me not only to see the director of "Three Monkeys", but also to feel his transcendence to himself.
It's a literary film, so despite its babble and long dialogue, it doesn't feel boring or sleepy at all. Because the dialogue is all ideas, and the dialogue is dramatic, it's enough to create tension, attraction, suck yours in, and feel like you're not done after the movie.
The first thought after watching the movie was why is the title called "Hibernation"? Who is hibernating? The shooting season is in winter. In the movie, we see snowflakes and white mountains, but these are not the reasons why the movie is called "hibernation". The real hibernation: the lack of self-examination, the seemingly inexorable confrontation between the two classes. The former is Ceylon's self-criticism, and the latter is a problem faced by Turkey and the whole world. This is the real public knowledge, constantly examining one's own soul, and at the same time never forgetting the world around him.
The protagonist, Aiden, has a shadow of Ceylon. He used to be an actor and is now a writer. He is rich and has a beautiful wife. The story begins with an accident---the window glass of the car was smashed by the tenant's child, and how to deal with this incident? The child's uncle brought his nephew to the door to apologize, and the child's hatred for the employer was palpable. The lord didn't want to make things stiff. For the third time he came to discuss the reparations alone, Aiden showed no mercy at all, and seemed to be businesslike. But at this time he became interested in his wife's charity project, which surprised his wife and made it difficult to accept. At the same time he and his sister quarrel over their attitude towards evil. His attitude is not to stand on the opposite side of the evil, let the evil disintegrate on its own, and repent on its own. He insists on his own ideas, and gives the impression that he is an idealist, a diligent, tolerant person with the heart of a bodhisattva. His sister kept saying that he was not practical. He said she was lazy, empty, doing nothing, picking on others all day long, forgetting that she also has many problems, so she divorced.
But what kind of person is Aiden? We see the complete separation of his words and deeds! While demanding compensation from the tenants, he began to care about charity; while claiming that he did not stand on the opposite side of evil, but when he saw his wife approaching other men, he immediately became angry and asked her to leave those men. According to his theory, he should ignore it and let these men go on their own. He said that he could not do it himself, completely duplicitous. Of course, only his wife felt it the most. So in the end, when the two clashed, she bluntly said your selfish and lazy words. His wife's condemnation was much like his condemnation of his sister. Ceylon is so smart and wise to use his wife's condemnation to respond to his condemnation of his sister, let us see how opposed a person's words and deeds are, so as to know the meaning of the title of hibernation - hibernation is the human heart , or that the part of the heart dedicated to self-examination has been hibernated by people blindly self-indulgent, and people only see others, not themselves.
Because of this, the conflict between Aiden and his sister and his wife cannot be avoided, and the confrontation with the tenant is also doomed to be there forever, and this world is doomed to be a separate world. In the end, his wife sent the money the tenants needed to be thrown into the firewood, indicating that Ceylon had given up hope for the world.

Winter Sleep quotes

  • Aydin: Justice doesn't even exist in nature, why should it exist here?

  • Aydin: [Epilogue] Nihal, I didn't go away. I couldn't. Whether it's because I've grown old, or I've gone mad, or because I've become a different man, think what you like. I just don't know. But this new man inside me for a few days won't let me go away. Please, don't ask me to go either. I now understand nothing is calling me to Istanbul. Everything is alien to me there as it is everywhere else. I want you to know that I have no one but you. And I miss you every minute, every second that goes by. But my pride will never let me tell you this. I know very well how to terrible or impossible it would be to part from you. Just as I know that you do not love me anymore. I know we can't go back to the old days. And there is no need to. Take me with you like a servant, like a slave. And let us continue our life even if we do it your way. Forgive me.
