About the ending of the S401 programmer (with spoilers)

Some people feel bad about the programmer's ending, arguing that he didn't commit a crime in reality and shouldn't end up like this.

When programmers create characters, they use other people's DNA to create digital clones of each other. This is obviously different from completely "pinch" game characters. These digital clones have the independent consciousness of human beings and will actively ask for help from the outside world. And even if the persecuted characters are made out of thin air, they will not ask for help. When we in the "real world" can transmit DNA and consciousness to the virtual space, we can use our current laws to determine that the behavior of the characters in the play has been Inappropriate, in that era, there will inevitably be more legal rules for various behaviors and associations between "reality and virtuality", think about how many tricks humans can come up with.

Leaving aside legal issues, this plot is not someone who suddenly fell from the sky and forcibly gave the programmer this ending. All tragedies are caused by the programmer's behavior. The mistakes he made in the virtual world are also the mistakes he made in reality. Because without the carrying and initiation of reality, there is no virtual behavior. The virtual space in the play can affect reality. There are too many connections between the two. Too deep, causing him to derail himself.

However, it is worth noting that the programmer himself is also a virtual character. If people can accept that he can do whatever he wants in the virtual space of his world, why can't they accept that the screenwriter gave him such an ending in our world?

USS Callister quotes

  • Robert Daly: I'm coming to get you!

  • Robert Daly: [Furiously patching through to Walton, who is fixing the engine manually from the jet fader] Walton, you're going to pay for this.

    Walton: Robert, listen.

Robert Daly: I'm going to bring Tommy back in.

    Walton: Hey, Robert, listen...

Robert Daly: God so help me, you are going to regret all of this SO HARD!

Walton: Bob, I wanna talk to you here! I was thinking i should say... sorry.

    Robert Daly: [Beat] Go on.

Walton: [Breathlessly as he fixes the engine] You created Infinity. You're a fucking genius. I exploited that. I treated you like the golden goose and I got fat off the profits, figuratively speaking. And I was thinking, I should have appreciated you more, you know? I should have treated you better. Yeah, yeah I was thinking I should say all that.

    [Beat]

Walton: But then you threw my son out of an airlock, so... FUCK YOU TO DEATH.

[Activates the engine which incinerates him]
