I can't sleep, I read Cairo Purple Rose again

In my understanding, a good comedy is essentially a tragedy. Similarly, as expressed by the little characters in this film: an "idealist" who may be dissatisfied with reality is essentially a pure realist. Facing the life of the upper class, the interesting soul, the movie and the spiritual world that the "idealists" want to escape from, this boring and hopeless "reality" may be what they want to escape. But the truth is that when those longings are possible, the more they want to escape from reality, the less able to resist the temptation of reality. They will always be ideal traitors.

Like every Cecilia, if you want the moon in the sky, you can give up sixpence, but not the villa in Beverly Hills. Maybe that's what this movie is trying to say, not everyone is eligible to escape from reality, but there will always be a lot of desperate idealists in sheep's clothing. Under their beautiful and kind skins, they are also the same souls full of desire and longing for redemption. Then I remembered the words Cecilia's violent and alcoholic husband said to her when she ran away from home: "You will definitely come back." Yes, it is hopeless, you feel sorry for her, but there is no redemption?

The Purple Rose of Cairo quotes

  • Cecilia's Sister: The one that I liked is "Okay, America!"

Cecilia: Oh, yeah! I saw that twice. That was great! When she threatens to kill Lew Ayers.

Cecilia's Sister: I love Lew Ayers looks! Do you think he's married?

Cecilia: What do you mean married? Are you crazy? Yes, he's married to Ginger Rogers! God! They got married on a boat off the island of Catalina. They live in Beverly Hills and sometimes holiday in Spain. He used to be married to Lola Lane, but, Ginger's better for him. She's so lovely.

  • Cecilia: Ginger used to be married to Jack Culpepper, who I think took out Ruth Chatterton before she married George Brent.
