Unwanted ideology

I don't like this "Church", probably because I am a non-religious person, and I was not moved by the so-called "sad ending", but instead felt that it was fake.

In the age of muskets, it was very difficult to encircle the Indians in the jungle. The steep mountains and forests are easy to defend and difficult to attack, and Indians have lived here for generations and are familiar with the terrain. The officers and soldiers wanted to bring muskets and drag heavy artillery to destroy them. It was easier said than done. The Indians in the movie are comparable to the Japanese devils in the domestic anti-Japanese drama. They stay at home, waiting for the officers and soldiers to travel thousands of miles and ride through the dangerous mountains and rivers. They don’t know how to use the favorable terrain. The official army intercepted halfway. In comparison, Taiwanese director Wei Desheng's "Sedek Bale" is much more real.

Some people say that this movie is based on real events, and I doubt it. The Indians grew up in the jungle. They come from nature and love nature. I believe they also have their own beliefs, just like the Indian who saved the little plum in "Wild Hunter". However, the Indians in this movie are actually afraid of the jungle and will say "there is something scary in it", which is contrary to common sense.

There is no doubt that the shots of this movie are beautiful, because the local natural scenery is indeed beautiful, but the religious consciousness is too strong. In order to create a sad religious story, regardless of the rationality of the plot, it is blunt and horrible.

The opening was excellent, the monks performed asceticism under the open curtain, and the Holy Light of Jesus appeared. But as you go deeper, you will gradually find that the text essentially points to the irreconcilable conflict between the preachers of God and colonial politics, and the real victims of this conflict, the Guaraní people, are really absent. The Guaraní people, despite being seriously out of step with modern civilization, chose to convert to the Jesuits in a highly civilized manner. Isn't it a helpless choice to escape the captivity of Western colonists? Therefore, the murders and deaths we see are just the extension of the internal contradictions in the West in different places, but such a collision is enough to destroy a settlement and a civilization. The setting of De Niro and Irons following two paths retains a figurative conflict with an abstract core, but compared to the absence of aboriginal images, such a division has become too greedy. It might be a lot better if you just focus on climbing the waterfall, stalking the road, but dying under an irresistible force. SIFF24@上shadow

#SIFF# I finally understand why I applaud when the soundtrack appears in the beginning of the film.

The Mission quotes

  • Altamirano: With an orchestra, the Jesuits could have subdued the entire continent.

  • Gabriel: So you're hunting above the falls now, Captain Mendoza?

    [pauses]

Gabriel: We're building a mission here. We're going to make Christians of these people!

Mendoza: If you have the time.
