Why do we watch the same show over and over again?

I watched "Friends Reunion Special" a few days ago, and then I realized that it has been 17 years since the last episode of that year was broadcast. The youngest Chandler among the 6 is already 52, and the oldest Phebe is 57 years old. .

I first started watching "Friends" in 0102. Like many people, I first started watching it under the name of learning English, and then it became a habit. Just started rewatching "Friends".

those rewatched dramas

It's not like when I was a kid, TV stations started to rebroadcast "Journey to the West" and "Huanzhu Gege" as soon as they were on vacation, and they watched it several times, intentionally or unintentionally, but it seems unreasonable to watch the same show over and over again today. Behaviour, after all, there are so many choices now, and almost no one has finished watching the excellent dramas from various countries, but there are not many people who watch the same drama repeatedly.

I've watched "Friends" no less than ten times in its ten seasons, and there are many friends around me who continue to watch "The Big Bang Theory", "How I Met Your Mother", "Modern Family" or "I" with the same enthusiasm. "Love My Home", "Wulin Gaiden" and Korean dramas such as the Please Answer series.

Foreign countries will also count the most repeatedly watched episodes every year. On the 2020 list, "Friends" is still firmly at the top of the list 16 years after its broadcast. The comedy category in the top 15 almost kills the list, but there are also unexpected choices. Horror Stories came in at number 10.

type of rewatch

The rewatching methods that I am familiar with can be roughly divided into two categories. One can be regarded as a kind of habit. I used to have a few years. When I was eating or cleaning my room, I would naturally open "Friends" and take "Friends" by my side. There are several friends who have dinner in Friends.

There is also a sense of ritual. For example, many people watch "Love Actually" once every year, as if there is no Christmas atmosphere if they don't watch it.

But why do we keep rewatching the same film and television work?

Difficulty choosing

Part of the reason is just mentioned, there are so many dramas to watch now, a Columbia University study shows that when there are too many choices, people will have a choice barrier, and after spending a lot of energy making a choice, they will worry about whether it is Wrong choice. The choice itself is a very tiring thing, so many times we will open the one that we love the most after deliberating between several new dramas.

After all, I know that this drama will not let me down. As for the new drama, maybe I will watch it another day when I have time.

nostalgic

Another reason is nostalgia, everyone starts to have their own nostalgia after a certain age, and as for the way of nostalgia, for different people, it could be an old song, some old object, a specific place, of course It can also be a TV series that you were addicted to back then, like a time capsule. When the theme song plays, it seems that you can relive that time with the characters in the play.

certainty

The last point, and one that I personally feel the most deeply, is the sense of certainty. There are many people who hate spoilers when watching movies and TV works, but paradoxically, our preference for suspense does not seem to be consistent.

Sometimes, when work and life make people too tired and anxious, what we want is not suspense and tension, but certainty and relaxation. Rewatching our favorite episodes is also a way to relax. We are familiar with that story and like it. Those characters, we know that the difficulties in front of him will soon be resolved, the two people who pass by at this moment will have lovers and will eventually be married. In this short period of time, the chaotic world seems to have returned to order, and anxiety about the future seems to be Also gain some sense of certainty.

So the years when I first started working were also the times when I rewatched "Friends" most often.

In this day and age, we seem to like new things very much. Every day news will refresh your memory, new movies are released, new online celebrity shops have long queues, and new co-branded models will never be available, but we will go to the same Shop, order the same dish, listen to the same song, walk the same road to work, and watch the same drama over and over again.

In uncertain times, there are certain things that are at least a little reassuring.

One of Calvino's definitions of a classic is a book that you will read over and over again, and there will always be something new. Many literary works that are regarded as classics today were actually products of mass entertainment at the time, so who knows, maybe the dramas we watch repeatedly in a few years will become classics of this era.
