-------------------------------------------
The transformation of the main characters of the story is like this : The
male protagonist, John, has transformed from a lecherous bastard into a loving and righteous priest.
The heroine, Yu Mo, has transformed from an innocent but intelligent and attractive prostitute to a righteous, intelligent and attractive prostitute.
Prostitutes, from sensual and innocent harlots to sensual and virtuous prostitutes.
The supporting actress Shu Juan has transformed from an impulsive and selfish little girl to an obedient good boy.
Students, from impulsive and selfish little girls to obedient good children.
The important transformation of the protagonists occurs in the following sections:
John, when the Japanese army ravaged the church, was transformed because of screams.
Yu Mo, who doesn't know how to change, seems to be thinking of his childhood.
The prostitutes, because they were rescued once by the students, later wanted to rescue the students in the tower, and after a discussion with Yu Mo, they changed.
Shu Juan, after being frightened, obeyed.
Students, after being frightened, they obeyed.
The roles of the other supporting roles are basically masked:
Instructor Li, an idealized Chinese soldier, who fights against one hundred in wartime, and is usually delicate and affectionate.
Shu Juan's father, an idealized good father, has always hesitated, but the choice is always correct.
Little George, an idealized religious believer, dedicated himself to sacrifice.
So these large sections of the movie have nothing to do with the transformation of the main character:
the Chinese army resisting Japanese tanks.
Instructor Li singled out the Japanese squad.
The two girls were raped and killed by the Japanese army.
The prostitutes play Qin Huai Jing.
Prostitutes wrap their breasts and dress up.
John does makeup for the prostitutes.
As can be seen from the above, the content and visual impact of this film have nothing to do with the transformation of the core characters. Those changes are actually nothing more than repayment of gratitude + superficial reasons for being forced to be helpless, so the whole movie is extremely powerless.
But this is not a movie that feels nothing after watching it. Its strongest feeling is the pain caused by visual and auditory stimulation, and this pain comes entirely from the director's choice of a means of expression that abuses the audience. Neither violence nor sexuality is relevant to the main plot.
In the end, the composition of this film is as follows: a
superficial and powerless but still self-justifiable story 35%
war fantasy and fireworks show 35%
visual and auditory violence and abuse of the audience 20%
Qinhuai women's charm show (including the pure version) 10%
the last, do not give 1 star, and why I went to see this movie -
Christian Bale visits the blind
