The film is based on Yan Geling's novel of the same name. It tells the story of Nanjing in 1937, a schoolgirl in a church, fourteen women who escaped from the war, and soldiers and wounded soldiers who were desperately resisting, facing the Nanjing Massacre together.
Through the eyes of the student Shu Juan, the film allows everyone to see the bloody war, the purity of the teaching students, the choice between the priest and the soldier, the devotion of the despised prostitute at the last minute...thus revealing the multi-faceted nature of human nature, not only making People remember this humiliating history, as well as thinking and examining about human nature.
The theme of this film is the disclosure of the essence of human nature and the redemption of human nature displayed by the bottom people. The colorful cheongsam in the film is consistent with the beauty of human nature and the theme of human redemption.
