Shooting Ye Wen, hating the family and the country, punishing the evil and the traitor, that is essential. One-on-one group fights, close hand-to-hand combat, that is the core of the film. The action design of Ip Man 3 is quite thoughtful, and there are some innovations and breakthroughs in scenes, moves and scenes. Donnie Yen, Zhang Jin, and Tyson, the three kung fu masters, also gave full play to their respective strengths and achieved the main selling point of the film. However, apart from these, what I like more is another part of the film, that is, Ip Man's family and relationships.
The film is mainly composed of two lines, one moving and one static, one fast and one slow. Compared to the tense and exciting main line of fighting, I prefer this sub-line that depicts the emotions between Ip Man and his wife and children. This line does not have much ink, accounting for about one-fifth of the film's length. Because of the short time, the selected shots are well thought out. One of them was that Ye Wen was dragged to take a photo with his peers and forgot his agreement with his wife. Just a few lines of dialogue showed Ye Wen's respect and attention to his wife. Later, when his wife became seriously ill, Ye Wen endured the grief, accompanied his wife to see a doctor to get medicine, and learned dance for his wife. Even if his status and reputation in the martial arts world were threatened, he still had no regrets. Such a simple truth, in those times, was so precious, and it also added a lot of moving points to this film with a strong man's style. There is no lack of tenderness like water, which makes Ye Wen's image more three-dimensional and full. Donnie Yen and Xiong Dailin's interpretations are also quite in place, not exaggerated, but feel.
Another important role in the film is Zhang Tianzhi, a coachman played by Zhang Jin. Zhang Tianzhi was a typical tragic character in that era. He had martial arts skills and ambitions, but his luck was not good. But his human nature is not bad, and he is sympathetic and righteous. The screenwriter has given Zhang Tianzhi a variety of levels. Compared with Ye Wen's perfection, Zhang Tianzhi's character flaws appear more real and grounded. Zhang Jin's kung fu is really good, and the play is good.
Compared with Wang Jiawei who pursued film art in a generation of masters, and Xu Haofeng who pursued alternative pioneers in his masters, Ip Man is easy to understand, straightforward, and has a different flavor.
