There are enough reasons to condemn the many misfortunes brought by the heroine to the hero:
1. The missed appointment on the eve of fleeing to France, leaving the male protagonist in exile in Paris alone
2. After the male protagonist settled down in Paris, the female protagonist's visit broke the male protagonist's peaceful love
3. The female protagonist fled back to live with the male protagonist after getting married, but blamed the male protagonist for not being the same as when he was in Poland, and abandoned the male protagonist and disappeared quietly
4. The male protagonist pursued the female protagonist all the way back to Poland, and was tortured at all costs in exchange for his Polish identity.
5. After the heroine rescued the hero from prison, she took the hero to death.
However, the heroine did nothing wrong. Every girl in love can be a little bit willful. Sadly, in the era of the "Cold War", every choice suffered an unexpected ending. In this era, everyone's life is like walking on thin ice. Two people are deeply chasing sincere love, but it leads to a tragic ending for two people. This is what the movie is about to express.
The greatness of love highlights that era of dehumanization.
