Ang Lee once said, "The movie does not bring everyone into the darkness, but takes everyone through the darkness and examines it in the dark. In this way, when you return to the sunlight, you will understand how to face life."
I think the Korean director Kim Ki-duk has A lot of movies are like that. His films are full of negative energy plots of sex, violence, filth, brokenness, darkness, and despair, but they always reveal the kindness and tenderness of human nature behind this cruel appearance.
"The Empty Room" is a film directed by Kim Ki-duk in 2004. This film won 7 or 8 awards and won the Silver Lion Award at the 61st Venice International Film Festival, but the hero and heroine of the whole film only said After one sentence (if the heroine said an "ah" word, it would be counted as two sentences).
The plot is bizarre. Taishi is a quiet and strange young man who goes door to door on a motorcycle every day doing nothing to hand out flyers. If the flyer is still on the door after today, it proves that there is no one in the house, so Tai Shi will pick the lock and go in for a while. But Tai Shi's behavior is not to go in and steal things. He goes in and takes a bath, cooks and takes pictures. Just like the owner, he also repairs furniture and cleans the room.
It wasn't until one time that he entered a high-end villa and stayed in it for a while before realizing that there was another woman in the house who had been raped by her husband. Half of her face was swollen, her body was covered with wounds, and her eyes were full of sadness and loneliness. Tai Shi was frightened and fled, but he thought about the woman who was raped and felt that she was pitiful, so he returned to the villa again. This time, he happened to see Sun Hwa's husband being violent to Sun Hwa, so Tae Shik rescued Sun Hwa.
Tai Shi led Shan Hua to live a life of finding an empty room to live in. Although they had never spoken, they were able to understand each other's thoughts very tacitly. Until one day they entered a room and found an old man's body in it, Tai Shi and Shan Hua took the funeral seriously and stayed in the house. As a result, the old man's son came to the door, Tae-seok was taken away as a murderer, and Sun-hwa was taken away by her husband.
The story doesn't end there. Shanhua often returned to some of the "homes" he had visited with Taishi, and found peace and tranquility there. And Tai Shi finally succeeded in "escape from prison" in practice stealth again and again. In the end, Tai Shi returned to Shan Hua's house and used a magical way of invisibility, so that Shan Hua's husband could not be found, and lived happily with Shan Hua every day.
1. Each of us is born alone.
We cannot know what Taishi has encountered in the past and how he grew up. I can only see him alone, living alone in every "empty room" until he meets Sun Hwa. He cleans every "empty room" and takes selfies in the room. Can it be said that he also longs for the company of his family and a warm home in his heart? And the heroine Shanhua, through the photo album in the room, we can also see that she may have been a model. In the photo album, her eyes are divine and she can speak. And now, her eyes are filled with sadness, helplessness and loneliness.
In the vacant room of the family of three that Tai Shi entered, the family of three left a message on the phone saying that they were happy to go on vacation. However, when the family of three returned home, they were not happy and sweet at all, but endless quarrels. Even the eyes of the children showed a kind of frightening "evil". Obviously it is the most enviable family of three, why is this still the case?
There is also the old man who died at home and no one was found. It is conceivable how lonely he is in his usual life, and he is alone until his death. The appearance of Tai Shi Shanhua, such a ceremonial funeral, seems to be able to bring the last bit of human warmth to the old man.
Maybe this is our real world, each of us is like a lonely empty room, indifferent to each other, selfish and hypocritical, and eager to be loved.
2. Stealth is visible to him, love does not need language.
I found that Kim Ji-deok's movie lines are very few. In this movie, the male protagonist did not speak, and the female protagonist only said "I love you" to the male protagonist at the end. Maybe this is the way the director likes to express. There are so many ways to communicate in this world. We send WeChat, make phone calls, communicate face-to-face, send emails... Maybe it is because of so many ways of expression that we can communicate Unable to face each other truly, unable to experience our inner voice carefully, we use the most convenient way of communication, but we are slowly alienating each other and strangers to each other.
Love may not need language at all. A look, an action, you can understand. Shanhua blew the instant noodles that he fed to Tai Shi, slowly learned Tai Shi's way of doing things, and walked hand in hand tacitly.
When Tae-seok is finally "released", only Shan-hwa can see Tae-seok. No matter whether Tai Shi is the real person or the other self in Tai Hua's heart, this is love. Love is what makes us capricious and makes us feel happy.
The film ends by saying: It's hard to tell the world we live in is either a reality or a dream. It's hard to tell whether the world we live in is real or a dream.
Maybe life is like a dream, everything is nothing. Whether Tae-seok is a real existence or another self imagined by Sun-hwa, this is enough to warm her up and give her the courage to continue living. Maybe, when we feel lonely and desperate, there will be such a person to accompany us, we just need to feel it carefully and find his existence.
