relatively bland

After watching this movie last night, my first impression was: bland. It's so bland that I can't even remember its most basic plot. I only vaguely remember the last words of Aunt May at the end of the film: People may think I couldn't sing, but they could not say I didn't sing. Maybe this sentence is the theme of the film? About dreams, persistence, courage, experimentation, self-seeking, and not afraid of rumors.

These words should be reflected in the video, but I always feel that the theme is not clear, and there are still many questions in my heart:

1. Does the heroine know that she sings badly from beginning to end? At the beginning, the male protagonist accompanied the female protagonist to listen to a concert by a famous female singer. She sang really well, and the female protagonist was moved to tears by her and felt that she had never heard such a beautiful voice. Later, in the second half of the film, the heroine ran to record a record. When she listened to her records, didn't she realize the gap between herself and a good singer? And when she sang at Carnegie Hall, the soldiers went from roaring laughter to snickering in the back, didn't she feel it at all? Well, maybe she's too addicted to her singing...

2. About the male protagonist: He has been by the female protagonist's side, very warm, and seems to love her very much. But he doesn't live with her (the heroine has syphilis), and there is a girlfriend outside. When the pianist asked him if the heroine knew about the existence of this girlfriend, he did not answer directly, only that she understood. Later, the heroine came to the door, and he hurriedly hid his girlfriend, indicating that the heroine did not know his girlfriend's existence. So the question is, does he love the heroine? If love, why have a secret girlfriend? Well, this can be understood as he has the sexual needs of normal men. Saying so, it seems that this character is understandable, and it seems that his merits outweigh his demerits. From the perspective of the heroine, his only flaw is having another woman, and this is an understandable (though not enough to support) behavior in the situation at the time. In addition, he takes good care of the heroine everywhere, and is also her soulmate and spiritual partner. He weaves a world of her dreams for the heroine and is always by her side. From the viewer's point of view, this character should be worthy of praise and admiration: he is warm, kind, meticulous, deeply in love with the heroine, and accompanied our heroine through most of the good times in her life. The heroine has him, and life is also a kind of fulfillment.

3. Why does the pianist (forgive me for not remembering his name) cheer for the heroine later? Why did the heroine impress him? The heroine has syphilis and has been battling death. But pianists don't know this. What he saw was a very badly sung, fat and funny rich lady. Maybe a long time together has accumulated a friendship, so he finally said to the heroine: we can make it! (cause)? All I can say is: I love it!

4. Audience and newspaper commentary on Carnegie: Why are they so tolerant of a singer who sings so badly? How could such a singer have such a long career? If this were to happen now, if a singer moved slightly, there would be a lot of scolding on the Internet. Not to mention it sings so badly. I vaguely feel that the heroine is like a clown in a circus, or better, she is an entertainer, not a singer. In present words, she was just joking. And comedy is also very marketable, otherwise why do comedies often win high box office? What are the standards of art? do not know. But it is absolutely not possible to simply judge whether it is good or bad. In the words of the main theme, art serves the public. Maybe it's because the out-of-tune diva has something the public needs -- humor and engagement -- that makes her so tolerant of people.

(Crazy! I don’t know how to write a movie review! And after reading other people’s comments, I know whether I’ve read it carefully or not. Bar.)

Florence Foster Jenkins quotes

  • St Clair Bayfield: Are you fond of sandwiches?

    Cosmé McMoon: Yes.

St Clair Bayfield: Good, good. Madam Florence is inordinately fond of sandwiches. And potato salad as well. When we throw parties we make mountains of the stuff. It would serve you well to consume both with enthusiasm.

    Cosmé McMoon: I shall.

  • St Clair Bayfield: If you can forgive Madam Florence her little eccentricities, you'll find her to be a most generous and delightful person. Ours is a very happy world.
