Gus Van Sant's films always seem to belong to two men. The boy who chose to betray the world in [Elephant], Gerry who died in the desert in [Gerry], and another Gerry who walked out of the desert. Mike with his head buried behind Scott's back in the promotional photo, his eyes clear and tired.
Fragile like a dream. The lonely highway in Idaho, Mike's body curled up like a baby when he is lethargic, the warm light fading in the dark night. It was Mike's dream and he said I love you to Scott. That was not Scott's dream. He finally took the beautiful girl and returned to the upper class that belonged to him with a blank face. Gus Van Sant ruthlessly left Mike alone on the corner, and then we saw Scott's still silent expression through the window of the car passing gracefully.
Like My Own Private Idaho, like a helpless lonely gesture. For example, when we think of River Phoenix, who passed away in a hurry three years later, we are in a trance for a moment.
