The most familiar stranger

It's strange how I want to watch Gothic-style movies so strongly, and what's even more strange is that after watching two of them, I suddenly remembered the Ice Storm I watched ten years ago, and wanted to say something.
But don't know where to start.
This feeling is like the dark age and social problems shown in the movie: chaos, powerlessness, loss, and it will continue to be like this.

Real life emotions are always the hardest to put into words.

The snow was falling, and the children recounted the rebellious experimental conclusions in the classroom, venting their inner indifference and hopelessness through the shell of scientific rationality. Completely ignoring the teacher's hint of dissatisfaction and the surprised expressions of the classmates. Meanwhile, his sister may be imagining the ridiculous games of dabbling in prematurely, his dad is still trying to please the woman next door, and his mom is wrestling with whether to be aggrieved or find another way out.

Without authority, without hope, without faith and courage, the Watergate news flashed back in the film, implying that people's hearts are dry and helpless. Society is like a plate of frozen sand. In the day-to-day expectations and despair, it gradually loses its restraint and eventually becomes a self-centered indifference. If I want to cheer up but I can't get it, I want warmth but I can't get it. I have to look for comfort and go with the flow, like drug addiction, in the pleasure and sting of anesthesia again and again, to collect evidence of living.

When life has been riddled with holes, blood and marriage books have become the only connection with each other. Pale and boring, long-term torment without hope, even family affection, unable to resist, so they closed their minds invariably, not because they didn't want to, but because they no longer had the energy to communicate.
The family is gradually desolate, and the wind and snow are still raging. In this way, they become the most familiar strangers. The calm pain and helplessness are revealed in the machinery of every dialogue and the avoidance of every look.

The couple decided to go to the wife swap game and try to let the trend inject something into the family, even if it is absurd, but it is better to live a lifeless life. However, they still failed to persevere in the end, and finally both left.

Under the pressure of reality, the repeated struggle at the boundary of human nature is a needle for the soul. If you can't choose the right way to solve it, then it will calmly sting you when you are excited for overcoming.

Fears for the safety of the children reunite the defunct family when a rare snowstorm finally causes a storm in which someone has lost their lives. And the final reunion of this family of four finally brought a touch of warmth to the film.
It's just that the ice storm that has scarred the family is far from subsided.

That deep-rooted chill is here. There is no condemnation, no demands, no responsibility. Together today, they may go their separate ways tomorrow.

The most familiar stranger, everyone forgives you.

Because life can only go on like this.

And everyone is as powerless as you are.

ps: I watched this film just because I heard that the theme song of this film is the spread of Xu Meijing, and I was very curious about what kind of film can take on this calm and painful melody. Unexpectedly, the theme and performance of the movie is better than the song. Unfortunately, I didn't hear this song from the beginning to the end of the version I watched. If it appeared as an episode in the film at the end of the plot, I'm afraid it would be even more shocking. The ethics conveyed by this film is on the verge of collapse, the emotion is cold and numb, the future is hopeless, but it has an implied feeling of expectation, which is highly in line with the emotions and information contained in this song.
Personally, I think the film is very exciting, and the actors' acting skills are impeccable. Of course, due to the tone, it is inevitable that it is a bit dull and depressing. But I still think this is Ang Lee's best film, although I don't plan to watch it a second time.

The Ice Storm quotes

  • Wendy Hood: [On the phone] No, come on. He's like a big infected white head. I would never...

    [hears door being shut]

Wendy Hood: Shit, it's my parents.

[turns off light and hides under the bed still on the phone]

    Wendy Hood: He's so gross.

  • Wendy Hood: Dad, stop it!

Ben Hood: Get to sleep, young lady. I mean it.

Wendy Hood: [opens bedroom door] Fascist.

Ben Hood: If I were a fascist, I would have sent you to one of those southern military academies a long time ago. Now, get to bed.
