Kublai Khan came to Shangdu, In Xanadu did Kubla Khan
built a splendid Happy Palace, A stately pleasure-dome decree:
Where Alph, the sacrecl river, ran
flows deep Unmeasurable caves, Through caverns measureless to man
poured into the sunless sea. Down to a sunless sea.
There was ten miles of fertile soil, So twice five miles of fertile ground
With walls and towers were girdled round:
And there were gardens bright With sinuous rills,
cloves and cardamoms overflowing, Where blossomed many an incense-bearing tree;
The woods were as old as the hills, And here were forests ancient as the hills,
surrounded by sunny meadows. Enfolding sunny spots of greenery.
But along the pine and cypress green hillside But oh! that deep romantic chasm which slanted sharply
down, but it is a cliff and a deep valley! Down the green hill athwart a cedarn cover!
A wasteland!
As if by magic, A savage place
! By woman wailing for her demon-lover!
A pot of turmoil boiled in the deep valley, And from this chasm, with ceaseless turmoil seething
, As if this earth in fast thick pants were breathing,
a mighty fountain Soaring from time to time, A mighty fountain momently was forced:
in its bursts Amid whose swift half-intermitted burst
boulders bounced like hail, Huge fragments vaulted like rebounding hail,
like grains vaulting under flails! Or chaffy grain beneath the thresher's flail:
And'mid these dancing rocks at once and ever
, It flung up momently the sacred river.
It twists into a labyrinth of five miles meandering With a mazy motion
it passed through forests and valleys, Through wood and dale the sacred river ran,
to unfathomable caverns, Then reached the caverns measureless to man,
and sank noisily to the bottom of the backwaters. And sank in tumult to a lifeless ocean:
Kublai Khan heard from far, and 'mid this tumult Kubla heard from far
the voice of his ancestors prophesied war! Ancestral voices prophesying war!
The shadow of the Xiaoyao Palace is green, The shadow of the dome of pleasure
Floated midway on the waves;
The fountain and the cave symphony, Where was heard the mingled measure
A rhythmic ensemble. From the fountain and the caves.
Miracles come together here, and it was a miracle of rare device,
a palace of sunshine and a cave of ice! A sunny pleasure-dome with caves of ice!
I saw Adamsel with a dulcimer in my dreams, a
girl playing the piano - In a vision once I saw:
Abyssinian girl, It was an Abyssinian maid,
she plucked The strings, And on her dulcimer she played,
chanted Mount Apollo. Singing of Mount Abora. Wish I could copy her music and singing
in my heart Could I revive within me .
Her symphony and song,
then I would be intoxicated, To such a deep delight 'twould wiff me,
That with music loud and long
, I would build that dome in air,
That sunny palace and ice cave! That sunny dome! those caves of ice!
And all who heard should see them there, and all who heard should see them there, and
all should cry, "Beware! Beware! Beware!
Hair, shiny eyes! His flashing eyes, his floating hair!
We'll walk around him three times, Weave a circle round himthrice,
And close your eyes with holy dread
, For he on honey-dew hath fed,
drink the milk springs in paradise. "And drunk the milk of Paradise."
