It was a sleepless night again, and I was used to passing the time without disturbing others. I used the sleepless night to watch two versions of a movie "Lolita". Since I just finished reading the original book, I was still impressed, so let's write a review. The two films were released in 1962 (black and white) and 1997 (color), each with its own emphasis.
The 157-minute film in 1962 is a flashback to the opening of the shooting, but its saving grace is that it sets the stage for Mrs. Haze's early lover, Quilty. But the 1962 version saved so much, and changed so many parts without authorization, that I don't think it respects the original. For example, it was not Quilty who pretended to be a psychiatrist to break into H•H's house without permission, but H•H was asked to Talk to Lolita's school; Lolita's letter to H•H was cut too much; at the end of the film H•H gave Lolita $4,000 instead of $10,000;
The 1997 version is 137 minutes long. The beginning of this version is much softer. H•H drives the car staggeringly on the road. The bloody pistol is thrown on the passenger seat. H•H holds the steering wheel with blood in her hands. At the same time, he has been fiddling with the Lolita card in his hand. The film also foreshadows the impact of Annabel's appearance and early death on H•H, that is, why the appearance of Lolita is so irresistible to H•H. In the backyard of Haze's house, the reaction to H•H's first encounter with Lolita was portrayed as a three-pointer. Several errors from the 1962 version have been corrected here, and I also have to mention a few "intentions" of the film that may only be noticed by people who have read the original:
1. When H•H and Lolita drove past hotels, one of the hotels had a sign that said "Children under 14 Free" Lolita was always attracted to these signs (and the slogan that offered free snacks or drinks) in the original book. .
2. At the end, when H•H met Lolita, the dog was not omitted, and when H•H entered the door, she almost rubbed against Lolita's pregnant belly.
Regarding the particularity of Quilty's handwriting, how Lolita exchanged pocket money by seducing H•H was shown in the 97 version. Even the process of killing Quilty by H•H in the end, and the state of Quilty, beg to respect the original.
Compared with the 97 version, the 62 version is also too secretive, and some issues are not explained clearly. For example, in the 97 version, Quilty asked Lolita to shoot pornographic content with different men and women at the same time. In the 62 version, it only used the word Art Movie. Not only that, but also in H• The relationship between H and Lolita is not clearly dealt with.
Although the '97 version is quite respectful of the original, I still found a little discrepancy: Lolita's school requires four Ds (drama, negotiation, dance, date) instead of three Ds (drama, dance, date) )
Neither version shows H•H giving Lolita quinine (sleeping pills), in the 97 version H•H gave Mrs Haze, and the 62 version doesn't mention it at all. After all, a movie is a movie, a product produced to satisfy the audience, and "Lolita" is a memoir, a monologue, it is not intended to satisfy anyone, so it has the truth, if you have enough time, you can consider watching it if you have enough patience. original.
