Although the story has never been the main factor in Pynchon’s novel, only through the story like this detective novel can we clearly understand Pynchon’s narrative strategy. The protagonist of the novel, Doc, is a private detective. His ex-girlfriend Shasta has come to ask for his help. Her current lover, real estate tycoon Mitch Ulfman, is in crisis, and the tycoon’s wife and lover are about to join forces to annex him. The property, intends to send him to a mental hospital. Later, Shasta mysteriously disappeared with Mickey. In order to find his lover, Dock became a suspect in the murder case and was almost framed by Sheriff Big Ford. The story then became more bizarre. First, he visited the tycoon’s wife to find clues. In the bar, he ran into the rock musician and undercover Coy (a woman commissioned to find the husband). He sneaked into the mental hospital and wanted to rescue the dentist who was rejected by the tycoon and died mysteriously. Then the ex-girlfriend appeared magically, and the suspenseful detective effect seemed to end without a problem, and the novel can come to an end here. But in order to get the musician Coy back home, Doc decided to investigate further, and an astonishingly huge drug organization and dark activities surfaced.
The story of "Sexually Evil" took place in 1970, and the end of the novel is almost a happy ending: Shasta returns to the beach town, Coy quit drug addiction and reunites with his wife and daughter, even both righteous and evil. The real estate tycoon Ulfman returned home safely. This kind of weird ending is not like Pynchon’s novel style, but it is this unique "reunion" ending that makes the novel a bit more tragic, because it corresponds to the end of an era: faith in love and rock and roll. The Pi generation gradually disappeared after the 1969 Woodstock Music Festival. The ubiquitous “psychedelic” scenes in the novel originated from the people’s obsession with marijuana and various psychedelics in that era. Through this important medium, the scenes in the novel blur the boundary between reality and illusion, causing a lot of problems. Big reading troubles. Many scenes are plausible, and we don’t know which ones are real and which ones are fake. But in this psychedelic atmosphere, that era is over.
Many readers would think that the plot of "The Evil of Nature" is weird, but there is nothing in this novel that has surrealism, only the fantasies spawned by cannabis psychedelics, and the readers are relatively easy to locate "reality" and "fantasy" in the narrative. As usual, there is a plot structure surrounding branches. Pynchon is a romantic novelist who pays equal attention to each character and opens a back window for the life experience of each supporting role. His encyclopedic style is a literary attempt of American democracy. It is not only to objectively reflect the full picture of society and the intricate social relations, nor is it just to prove that the past literary traditions can be mastered, but to achieve the real American novel: the authenticity of an era through a fictional detective role, through him Wandering, observing, and colliding around, using points and areas to measure the depth of the history of that era.
