Revenge: A War With No Winners

Like the French film "Her", "The Salesman" is also a film in which the protagonist, after being illegally violated, does not want the police to intervene, and instead pursues the murder plot in a personal way.

Imad and Lana, the husband and wife duo in "The Salesman", after moving into a new rental house, their wife was accidentally attacked by a strange man while taking a bath at home and injured her head. After being taken to the hospital by a neighbor for treatment, they escaped. The husband and wife who have experienced one injury have to face the unavoidable second injury.

And this injury, not only from the surrounding public opinion, but also from their mutual hearts.

I don’t know if it is due to censorship in Iran, the film deliberately weakens the influence of the outside world on the hero and heroine, and it seems that other than discussing sympathy, no other changes have occurred.

The heroine is still acting in the drama, the neighbors are still helping them, and even the colleagues who are acting in the drama let their children live in their house alone for one night.

While this may seem all right, in a traditional Islamic country where even men and women have separate classes and women can only show their faces and hands, it's unbelievable. After all, even wearing clothes to play a prostitute will be laughed at by the actor, not to mention the heroine who opens the door of the room naked and leads the wolf into the room, which will inevitably be talked about after dinner.

Despite the external damage, Imad and Lana have had many verbal conflicts since then. They were planning to have children, but their relationship between husband and wife is like the cracked building in the title. Although it has not collapsed, it is in jeopardy.

Back to the question of choice at the beginning of this article. Lana tried her best to forget everything, but her husband never gave up looking for the real murderer. In the end, he set his sights on a bakery, and what was even more surprising was that the murderer turned out to be a seemingly innocent old man.

When the truth came out, Imad and Lana quarreled again because of their disagreement. Lana chose to forgive, while Imad insisted on punishment. In the end, the old man fell ill. Lana's ultimatum ended Imad's revenge. A slap in the face. This slap in the face became the last straw, making the old man, who was already in the throes, fall down again. Although the film does not explicitly tell whether the old man died, in any case, this will become a new knot for the husband and wife who have gradually let go.

At the end of the film, in the dressing room of the play "Death of a Salesman", the two were speechless and the curtain fell.

Here, I don’t want to judge political positions, and I don’t want to discuss class issues. I can even put aside ethics and morality. What I’m more concerned about is that, in addition to physical harm, the accidental damage itself is more about the aftermath of the incident. Chain reaction, and from the perspective of the victim, how to minimize the secondary damage of this chain reaction? Perhaps the only way is to let go and let go. If not, even if the murderer is brought to justice and punished, your life has already been sentenced to life imprisonment.

Of course, people who haven't experienced it can only see and think with an outsider's mentality. Grateful that fate keeps us outsiders of such events. But when fate hits us hard, please think from the perspective of a bystander: why not get rid of the burden and get out as soon as possible? After all, tomorrow morning, the sun will rise as usual.
