The real world from the director's perspective

The charm of movies is that they allow you to experience other people's stories and other people's lives. As an art, it oscillates between the real and the unreal, both to convince the audience with real details, and to tell a complete story in 90 minutes with just the right arrangement. And a good movie tells a story that makes people understand and convince. As one of the young people living in the United States, the movie seems to be designed for me. Those scenes and feelings are familiar, and the perspective is full of freshness. During the entire viewing process, only in the first half of the film, I have been crying repeatedly, and the details that are thought-provoking and worth pondering make people discover that this film is beyond the artistic cultivation of the documentary part.

Tell the story first, the story is very simple, and you can even see that some of the treatments have exacerbated the dramatic conflict. But distortion of this magnitude won't get me out of the way. In addition, because of the Chinese people's subtlety, many words are indeed not spoken like that, but if the lines are not made, just performing without lines will make it difficult for American audiences who are not familiar with Chinese culture to understand. Films that were originally cultural bridges hindered the achievement of their original goals by seeking truth. So, as a Chinese, I can feel that this choice is very clever. A simple story of making a scene for the dying elderly is actually being staged every day in many Chinese families. However, this kind of white lie, the burden and harm to the family is real. How many family members, in order to hide their illness from the elderly, cry alone and then smile all over their faces. And how many families, the drama is smashed, and the family has a lot of anger and guilt under the blow of the original illness. However, in any case, these are all out of love, what should be done, the movie does not give the answer.

If I say the most impressive, or the perspective of storytelling. I don't have the ability to comment on the unique perspectives one by one. But just having a strong resonance that honestly brings these realities and issues to the audience bit by bit, it really feels really good. In fact, this problem is not a problem for most Chinese people, but it is a concentrated expression of the cultural differences between China and the United States. This kind of topic is not easy to talk about. However, I really appreciate the way the director speaks with reason. She uses images and facts to present them, and she does not shy away from this difference, and she tries hard to present it to people in English culture.

I think maybe those Americans are the audience for this movie. But as a person who travels between Chinese and American cultures, I am moved by the story. I also think that there should be less ism and more real events between different cultures, so that everyone can quietly understand and become familiar with them. Maybe this movie has more practical significance under the current social environment.

Grandma played so well, I hope to be nominated for Oscar! Behind "Don't Tell Her" is the Eastern philosophical culture that can only be understood. The dialogue is a bit blunt, maybe it's a special offer from overseas Chinese. I just wanted to buy a plane ticket to go home...

The Japanese uncle was so embarrassed about the cultural differences between the East and the West that he even cut it into the trailer

The Farewell quotes

  • Billi: [frustrated] Are you going to tell Nai Nai?

Haiyan: I can't, Billi. I won't go against my family.

Uncle Haibin: Billi, there are things you misunderstand. You guys moved to the West long ago. You think one's life belongs to oneself. But that's the difference between the East and the West. In the East, a person's life is part of a whole. Family. Society.

Uncle Haibin: You want to tell Nai Nai the truth, because you're afraid to take the responsibility for her. Because it's too big of a burden. If you tell her, then you don't have to feel guilty. We're not telling Nai Nai because it's our duty to carry this emotional burden for her.

  • Jian: You're broke again? Are you always going to live like this?

Billi: Poor but sexy? I hope so!
