2020.1.13

When this movie was originally set, I saw the theme and wanted to watch it. As a result, it was ill-fated and the file was temporarily changed.

When reviewing on the last day, I saw a public account talking about it. It was a film review written by a Chinese who grew up in the United States. To be honest, I cried after reading the review. So, I checked the film and found that the time was very inappropriate, so I couldn't watch it. As a result, I will watch it again today, if there is a suitable arrangement, I will watch it.

Regarding the film itself, the shooting is real and down-to-earth. The theme of the film is to talk about cultural differences between the East and the West, and different views on death. The movie itself is very good, when I had the idea to watch it, there was no news that the heroine won the award, and even I didn't know it was nominated for a Golden Globe when I saw the poster in the theater today.

1/ The movie is actually not as "good to cry" as imagined.

Once, when Billie just returned to China and hugged her grandmother, she burst into tears. People who travel far away from home are probably affected by that kind of emotional contagion.

Another time, when they finally returned to the United States, grandma explained to Billie sentence by sentence outside the taxi, the car drove out, and the old man chased the car for a few steps, waving hard behind the car.

The same is true for my grandmother. Every time I leave home, I sit in the car and say to my grandmother, "Grandma, I'm leaving." That's been a long time. Every time I say goodbye to my grandparents, I can't help but cry. Although I don't want to think about it, it's true that I see one side less.

This scene in the movie really made me cry.

2/ The movie is actually pretty funny.

Especially the wedding one.

It's really a traditional Chinese custom.

(If I will get married, I really refuse such a wedding)

3/ In fact, grandma is just an ordinary old man. This is really just an ordinary story that happened around us.

At the wedding, everyone ate and drank and was very happy. Billie asked her father, do they know the truth? Dad replied, maybe know.

The wedding was actually the beginning of Billie's "transformation". She saw that her grandmother was happily chatting with old friends, maybe she understood the "white lie", so she ran to get the report and helped to correct it.

In the film review I read, Billie's change was not abrupt at all, it was all because of love.

Yes, it's all because of love. Sometimes we really need to admit that we are Chinese, and the traditional Chinese way may be more suitable for us.

4/ In fact, everyone is "cheating".

When grandpa got cancer, grandma kept it from him; when Billie and grandma called, they "cheated" each other.

It's always like this, "reporting good news but not bad news".

Don't call your family when you're sad. It must be when you are in a good mood to talk to your family.

5/ The director's arrangement is particularly interesting. Two sons, two families, uncle (should be called Uncle, but it's a bit strange) went to Japan, and Billy went to the United States. This is also possible in the way uncle and dad treat their children later. See the difference between East and West. Billie "questioned" why Dad had quit smoking why he still smoked, uncle said, you can't control him, he is your dad.

When eating in front, Uncle said that Haohao could speak Chinese, but he was just shy and asked Haohao to say a few words to his grandma. And Billie's parents won't do that, they respect Billie.

I think that Haohao's "shy" character has something to do with her parents, and of course, Billie's character has something to do with her parents too. The influence of the family of origin is always inescapable.

6/ The movie is based on a true story.

I hope that all grandparents and grandparents in the world are healthy and live a long life.

I still remember that Liu Tao was on the show. I regret that when my grandmother was still there, I couldn't show her around. Now I have the ability, but no longer have the opportunity.

There are always regrets in the world, and it is most regrettable that "the child wants to be raised but the family does not wait".

I hope my grandparents can be healthy and live a long life, and can give them the money I earn.

The Farewell quotes

  • Jian: Chinese people have saying, when people get cancer they die. It's not cancer that kills them, it's the fear.

  • Jian: I don''t like, you know, put all my emotion on display. Like I''m in the zoo. But in here, if you don''t cry, you don''t put a show, they think that you don''t love your family. You know, in here, they even hire some professional criers. Just to show how sad they are. It''s just so ridiculous. I hate that.
