"Underground" represents Kustrika's unbridled playful style, as energetic as all Yugoslavs, accustomed to having fun in endless wars. The story spans sixty or seventy years, and in a nutshell, it's a love triangle between two gangsters (war opportunists Marco and Bridget) and an actor. This actress is a bitch, always using her beauty for material gain. They would be thieves and rogues for a while, but they could turn into revolutionary heroes, and they were played with by nature and turned into terrorists. Everyone is doing whatever they can to enjoy their own sensuality, no one is really fighting for their ideals, and everyone has long lived peacefully in the lie. Gangs of opportunists died on the big stage of Yugoslavia, and in the end, as we saw at the end of the film, the land of Yugoslavia was divided into pieces...
