Looking at it, I couldn't help but think of Hawthorne's scarlet letter, Molly, who was abandoned by a man and charged with adultery, her good sewing skills, and the red dress on Tilly's body, are they similar to the scarlet letter? And the protagonist of this movie is a grown-up Pearl---Tilly, who seems to be returning home for revenge. Stripped of Hawthorne's religious irony, the film's focus is on the lethality of gossip and hypocritical moral kidnapping. Lies and gossip drive the good people to the end, tilly finally breaks through the curse, like God destroys the sin city of Sodom, she destroys the whole town with fire.
