"Minari" means water celery in Korean and is the favorite food of Koreans. In the film, the male protagonist's family are Koreans who are struggling to make a living in a foreign country. They open a small pasture on the edge of the city to grow vegetables. In this family, one wife and husband are accustomed to obedience, and the other is unwilling to give in. The two of them have different religious beliefs, different dreams and pursuits, and their children's lives are in dire straits. The arrival of the grandmother broke the quarrel between them and just neutralized them. The water celery planted by my grandmother represents the favorite food of Koreans. At the end, the male protagonist seems to be looking at the hope of the future when he looks at the water celery. The water celery represents the hope of the male protagonist's family living in the United States, and also represents South Korea. Man's hope for the future.

The immigrant version of "Please Answer 1988" created by the toughness of the East and the wildness of the West, the father's pressure, the mother's loneliness, the grandmother's tradition, the daughter's sensibleness and the son's confusion create an epic family growth, they are like cress (Minari) Generally, it takes root in a foreign country, and it is difficult to survive in the uninhabited wilderness, but as long as there is a trickle, it can be reborn. After watching it, there is a kind of melancholy of seeing each other late. If you don't stick to the last moment of 2020, you will never know if your favorite movie will be the next one.

I don't know why it lacks some sincerity, and it is more about purposeful performances and plot conflicts. The only surprise is Yin Ruzhen's performance.

Minari quotes

  • Soonja: Penis broken!

    David: It's not called a penis, it's called a ding-dong!

  • Soonja: Minari is truly the best. It grows anywhere, like weeds. So anyone can pick and eat it. Rich or poor, anyone can enjoy it and be healthy. Minari can be put in kimchi, put in stew, put in soup. It can be medicine if you are sick. Minari is wonderful, wonderful!
