Whether you are a detective novel fan or not, the character of Sherlock Holmes has a profound impact on us. From the appearance of "A Study in Scarlet", to the fall of "The Last Case" into a waterfall, to the return of "The Empty House", and finally to the retirement of "The Last Regard", Holmes' career spanned half a century, and almost It's a no-brainer.
Since the era of silent films, in almost all of Sherlock Holmes's works, he is the serious, calm, rational genius who disdains to understand worldly affairs and ignores the world. These characters have made him strong, and it can even be said that these characters have shaped him into a detective's "god".
But if you're looking at the bizarre crime and the brilliant reasoning of the detective god, you're bound to be disappointed. Because the focus of this film is not on how to solve the case, but on the troubles and redemption of the old Sherlock Holmes. And the whole story is actually a transformation process for the aged Sherlock Holmes to step down as a detective.
The story of this film is told in three parts, one is the road to find rock and pepper in Japan, the other is the last case that Old Sherlock Holmes tried to recall but always had trouble remembering, and the heart disease that kept him in guilt and trouble, the other One is the relationship between old Sherlock Holmes and Roger Jr. and Roger's mother, the housekeeper. The first two events happened in different time periods, but they were both intertwined with the last story line through memories, echoing each other at the end, and completing the sublimation and self-redemption of old Sherlock Holmes.
The Holmes in this story, even though he is over ninety years old, still maintains his serious and rational attitude. He would seriously tell children not to approach the wasp, talk to the housekeeper seriously, treat the doctor stubbornly, and even point out that the housekeeper was mediocre, almost like a strange old man. And the only one who can soften his attitude is Roger Jr. Roger Jr. was smart and clever, and he won the favor of Sherlock Holmes, so the two became good friends, and it was Roger Jr. who promoted Sherlock Holmes's way of self-salvation.
Sherlock Holmes told Roger Jr. that death and grief were all too common, but logic was hard to come by. This is exactly how he has always approached things. Therefore, he is dissatisfied with Watson's adaptation of his detective stories, and he will not use white lies to make those readers who admire him happy, and if the truth is cruel, he is not willing to deceive the parties. So he felt that Watson had never understood him.
The truth, however, is that such a Sherlock Holmes is lonely, especially when his memory has deteriorated. He remembers that the last case he took left him in deep guilt and self-blame and disheartened, hiding in remote areas to raise bees. But even more frightening, he couldn't remember why. So he was in a kind of torture.
The old Sherlock Holmes finally recalled all the details of the story with the help of the glove that Roger and Watson hid in the depths of the cabinet through great efforts, and finally he realized that he used his logic and reasoning to solve it easily All the puzzles in the case, but failed to save the woman named Ann who was in pain. This is also the reason why he was disheartened into guilt and pain, and he finally realized that there are some things that cannot be solved only by logical reasoning and a brilliant mind. He chose to go into seclusion because he felt he would hurt those around him.
This pain, even Watson could not enlighten him.
Watson does not appear face-to-face throughout the story. Sherlock Holmes had always believed that Watson did not understand him, and eventually the two became estranged. Watson, however, was the one who knew Holmes best. He knew where Holmes' faults were, and he knew they would cause him pain, so he hid the glove in the cupboard. And when Sherlock Holmes walks off the altar by himself, he will finally understand the meaning of all this.
Finally, when the boy's mother cried and accused him of not caring about the little boy, he finally cried out in grief. When this iron-like old man in his nineties almost fell to his knees and cried and said that he cared about the little boy, it also marked the collapse of the wall of reason and calm in his heart, and he finally realized the emotion. True meaning, he also recognized the mistakes he made back then. He told the boy's mother that he should comfort the woman from an emotional point of view, instead of calmly rejecting it.
He finally appeases his client in far away Japan with a fictional story. He told Roger Jr at the beginning that he never mourned death, that death and grief were all too common. In the end, he mourned his dead friends and Ann in the way he saw in Japan.
Looking at the film, this is definitely not a wonderful and exciting adventure story, because this is not the hand of Conan Doyle. Yet the story appears to be true. The Sherlock Holmes written by Conan Doyle was almost never troubled by the human nature problems in life, while the Sherlock Holmes in this story is a very real person. Even if his reasoning ability has entered the realm, he still fails to solve the problems related to human hearts. many problems.
The pictures in the film are beautiful, the vast fields, sea and exquisite houses and gardens of the English countryside, quiet and beautiful. This kind of picture is also seen in the British drama "Detective Poirot" series, it seems that this is the style of British detective works. The story progress of this film is the same as the style of this picture, it comes slowly and goes away melodiously.
Mr. Ian's delicate performance in this film is perfect, especially the old-fashioned bell who is over ninety years old. His movements tremble, which makes people sad. And the little boy in the film is full of spirituality. This character and demeanor are very similar to the smart, clever and likable performance of Arya Stark's actor in "Game of Thrones".
Finally, when I saw the aging Sherlock Holmes finally opened the knot to mourn those who left him, I couldn't help feeling: those of us who came into contact with Sherlock Holmes in junior high school or high school are also getting old.
