Powerful but not aggressive

A stylized work that is more realistic than allegorical and visually powerful compared to The Immortal. The film can be divided into three parts: the resistance and conflict between prisoners and the police and the politics they represent, their weapons are limited, the destruction of the environment and their own coercion (killing); Sands' spiritual confession; Sands' physical death process. The sympathy of the body and the praise of the spirit, the contradiction between the two was placed in the political dispute between Northern Ireland and the United Kingdom, which reminds people of that tragic history and is also an ancient continuation of this contradiction. The penetration and balance of time make the film powerful, but not radical.

Hunger quotes

  • Father Dominic Moran: I want to know whether your intent is just purely to commit suicide here.

Bobby Sands: You want me to argue about the morality of what I'm about to do and whether it's really suicide or not? For one, you're calling it suicide. I call it murder. And that's just another wee difference between us two. We're both Catholic men, both Republicans. But while you were poaching salmon in beautiful Kilrea, we were being burnt out of our house in Rathcoole. Similar in many ways, Dom, but life and experiences focused our beliefs differently. You understand me?

  • Bobby Sands: I'm clear of the reasons Dom. I'm clear of all the repercussions. I will act and I will not stand by and do nothing.
