Marcello: This is our preferred art, an art that we will need in the future. A clear, precise art, no rhetorical tricks, so no lies, no flattery, now I'm doing a job I don't like, but I'm always thinking about the future.
Woman: We always think about the future, but don't forget to live in the present.
Poetess: I think if a person is full of soul and passionate about life, then an instant can be worth a year, and every year can be five years younger.

Ma: I should change the environment, I should change a lot of things. Your house is such a sanctuary, your children, your wife, your books, your extraordinary friends, and me, I'm wasting my time, I can't do anything anymore, I used to have ambitions, But it seems like I've lost them all, I've forgotten them all.
Steiner: Don't think that having a home makes you feel safe, don't imitate me, I'm too serious as a layman, and not strong enough as a professional musician, that's all. Believe me, the most miserable life is also better than a socially protected survival, where everything is calculated and everything is perfect. ... (kissing children) Sometimes at night, this darkness, this silence weighs down on me. Calm terrifies me. I'm afraid of peace more than anything else, it's like a shell to me, and hell is behind it, I think about what my kids will face, they always say "the world will be better" , why? A phone call can end everything, people should let go of passion and even affection and live in the harmony of a perfect work of art, in a fascinating order, we should learn to love each other so deeply that we will be immortal and detached .
(Steiner loved his children, but still had a deep melancholy -- killing his own children, then committing suicide; Steiner's fondness for recording various natural sounds suggests a Woolf-like view of the world.)
[Recording: Poet: You're a real primitive, as primitive as a Gothic spire, you're so tall that you can't hear anyone speaking.
Steiner: If you know my true height, you'll see that I'm not much taller than that. ]
High life, sex, orgy, people are never satisfied with the status quo
Madeleine wants to escape - Marcello is dissatisfied with her cowardice - Emma wants to marry her - American female star is dissatisfied with her fiance and wants to be free Manipulation) (Sissi-esque character) - Steiner lives a happy life without passion - The waitress wants to return to her hometown

. The relationship between the son and the father is alienated at a young age, and the father still refuses. (Marcello is always trying to do something, always in vain)

Marcello is in the room, Madeleine speaks to him from the hole outside.
Ma: Marcello? Can you hear it? I've never been this close to you, have I?
Ma: where are you? Can you hear it?
Ma: Yes.
Ma: where are you?
M: In the distance, far away, as if I no longer exist, as if I did not speak.
Ma: Madeleine, Madeleine!
Ma: (laughs) I'm here, don't move, (looking inward) Will you marry me?
Ma: how about you?
Marcello: Yes, I'm in love with you, Marcello.
Ma: When.
Ma: (grinding the slate) Do you know what this sound is?
Ma: I don't know.
Ma: (kissing his own hand) What about this one?
Ma: A kiss?
Marcello: For you, Marcello.

M: I want everything, I want to marry you, and I want to have fun like a bitch.
Marcello confessed in the room, and Madeleine made out with the man outside the room.

Emma – cooking and sleeping, imposed, tangled, maternal love.
Marcello's relationship with Emma and Madeleine can illustrate his ambivalence of addiction and disgust with this life.
Emma's everyday life bored him, but she represented the most real life, so Marcello finally made up after a fight with her.
Madeleine's charm almost captivated Marcello (her love made him proud), but in essence this is a bitch who has been turned into a symbol by a rotten life. (She also appears to want to flee) Emma calls them all "whores".

Banquet, Marcello: I've given up on journalism and literature, I'm now a full PR figure.
(Complete despair, but pushed to the end, resistance can only sink in the end.)
Caught a huge fish, eyes wide open, as if alive.
Woman: "Is it still alive?" Fisherman: "No, it has been dead for three days." The fish watched all these rotten and dirty humans. Like the statue of Jesus, which was hung by a helicopter at the beginning, overlooking everything on the ground. Marcello: It has round eyes.
On the other side of the sea, what the waitress was saying to Marcello, Marcello did not understand, and in the end did not try to approach, with a confused expression, he was pulled away by his companions.
The girl showed a bright and innocent smile.

Reminds me of Mrs Dalloway again

Extended Reading

#FelliniRetrospective#4.5; It took nearly 3 hours to read the high-end style, half of which is due to the flashy city of Rome, and the other half is inseparable from the director's excellent scheduling. The American movie star Sylvia is the most classic outing, especially the momentary cut of the scene symbolizing the point of view in the fountain, which brings audio-visual skills to the extreme. In the second act, the "Virgin" appeared on a rainy night, and the crowd ran with torches, continuing "Cabylia"'s attitude towards religious fanaticism. What's more interesting is that as the thread progresses, the protagonist has changed from suffering from paparazzi voyeurism to the object of the camera/audience's gaze. Therefore, although the structure of this film is loose, it is not a plane and disorderly pile of fragments, but makes people feel distracted. The immediacy, non-narrative rhythm of several carnivals is seized, leading to the death with a trajectory within the spirit. The round eyes of the strange fish on Dawn Beach reflect the emptiness of everyone's soul, as in the last episode of "Night". The girl's silent call corresponds to the passing era of innocence.

It's hard to have a movie that is as elegant and gorgeous, but at the same time it makes the viewer feel desperate as the story progresses. Fellini's group play is too amazing! Who can't say that crazy photojournalists, eye-opened American models, high-class people who are always partying, and those running around chasing the "Virgin" are actually the same kind of people? The only person with a bit of a brain can't get a good ending.

The Sweet Life quotes

  • Marcello Rubini: [to Sylvia] You are everything... everything! You are the first woman on the first day of creation. You are mother, sister, lover, friend, angel, devil, earth, home.

  • Steiner: Don't be like me. Salvation doesn't lie within four walls. I'm too serious to be a dilettante and too much a dabbler to be a professional. Even the most miserable life is better than a sheltered existence in an organized society where everything is calculated and perfected.
