That terrible desire "Rubber Head"

1977 David Lynch’s debut work "Rubber Head" David Lynch is good at creatively using sound effects and images to create a visual and auditory labyrinth, using strange and blurred as his personal style, focusing on constructing a dark atmosphere and unrealistic nightmares in the film. "Rubber Head" is the most comprehensive display of Lynch's style. We all hope that we can cover up ugly facts like an eraser, erase the unbearable past, and correct wrong choices. The film begins with Henry's visit to his girlfriend Mary's house: Mary's strong and serious mother, the mechanically smiling father, and the Venerable Mary fully demonstrate Mary's deformed family relationship. With the advent of an involuntary marriage and a deformed child, the film gradually entered a complete nightmare.
The theme of the film is clearly shaped. The sexual suggestion of Henry cutting the roast chicken when the family eats is very obvious, which makes it show the first rubber head: Mother Mary. Then, Henry's nightmare and fantasy shots, which occupy almost the entire film, deal with the cold and dark, absurd and strange, and also show his repressed desire for sex. Mary is a nonchalant, as can be seen from her dragging the bed when she leaves home. When the female neighbor appeared at Henry's house, the shooting technique was very horrifying and ingenious. A relationship between her and Henry released Henry's long-repressed desire, but she instantly collapsed after seeing her new boyfriend and killed the child with excitement. And this deformed child is actually a metaphor for Henry himself, a permanent release of his suppressed sexual desire.
The composition of the movie scene is very symmetrical, the color tone is cold, the atmosphere is weird, and the soundtrack is perfect. It is very appropriate to set off the atmosphere of the movie. It is gloomy, dark, helpless, empty, and weird, making it invisibly oppressive and insecure.

The dark and obscure nightmares, and the colorful colors in his future films are all complementary colors to this black and white film. (When I saw it, the pig next to me was happily dreaming XXD)

Eraserhead quotes

  • Mr. X: I thought I heard a stranger. We've got chicken tonight. Strangest damn things. They're man-made. Little damn things. Smaller than my fist. But they're new! I'm Bill.

    Henry Spencer: Hello. I'm Henry.

    Mrs. X: Henry's at LaPelle's Factory.

Mr. X: Oh. Printing's your business, huh? Plumbing's mine. For 30 years. I've seen this neighborhood change from pastures to the hellhole it is now! I put every damn pipe in this neighborhood!

    Mary X: Dad!

    Mrs. X: Bill!

Mr. X: People think that pipes grow in their homes. But they sure as hell don't! Look at my knees! Look at my knees!

    Mrs. X: Bill, please!

    Mr. X: Are you hungry?

Beautiful Girl Across the Hall: Are you Henry?

    Henry Spencer: Yes?

Beautiful Girl Across the Hall: A girl named "Mary" called on the payphone in the hallway about an hour ago. She said that she's at her parents' and that you're invited to dinner.

    Henry Spencer: Oh, yeah?

    [after a long pause]

Henry Spencer: Well... thank you very much.

[Henry enters his apartment, while the girl slowly closes the door to hers]
