"I Want to End It All", after watching it a few times, I seem to understand that the real character in this film is actually the old man, the old man who has no one to care about and is dying alone. I have never quite understood the meaning of some surrealistic plots in the movie, but from another angle, what if Jake, the heroine, and Jake's parents were all imagined? Those abstract, seemingly irrelevant and strange plots may have reasonable explanations. Let's briefly sort out some important plots and details. The whole movie seems boring and boring for a long time before the end, especially the long conversation between jake and the heroine in the car that seems to be dispensable takes up a lot of time in the movie, in my opinion with limited knowledge Very boring, but the dialogue not only hides some details of the collusion plot, but also reflects that Jake has a certain artistic taste. Then there are some details in jake's parents' house: when entering the door, the old couple hadn't come downstairs for a long time, sometimes young and sometimes old parents, books piled up in jake's bedroom, photos of the heroine that appeared in jake's childhood bedroom, and the heroine soon The poems I read before, the endless stairs, and the cleaning uniforms full of washing machines in the basement that Jake didn't want the hostess to see... (By the way, the swing by the road is also a detail) The first time I saw these plots, I felt very strange, and even gave me a sense of horror. Finally, the story that happened in middle school, that dance and fight, and a crucial plot is the encounter between the old cleaner and the heroine... ...Actually, jake is the old cleaner. To be precise, jake is the young man imagined by the old cleaner: with an ordinary appearance. But many places in the film highlight his extraordinary soul. He is actually knowledgeable, erudite and kind. The director has repeatedly used the heroine's mouth to say that Jake is a good person. He is filial to his parents and has a gentle temperament. When I saw the dialogue between the heroine and the old man for the second time, I realized that the heroine was a cleaner. When I was young, I was fortunate to meet a girl who wanted to pursue but was missed because of her inferiority. This image was always reflected in the mind of the old man. In the old man's imagination, she had the story shown in the movie with her younger self. The climax of the film is the fantasy of the old cleaner coming out of school and returning to his car. A fantasy appeared in front of him, he took off all his clothes and walked to the school with the pig mentioned by jake in the previous article that he had thought of, and through the mouth of the pig said the inner monologue of the old cleaner, "There is always someone to do that. Maggot pig, you just have to take it, have fun and move on." Then there is an award-winning imagination (I still don’t quite understand the meaning of this paragraph), and finally the camera cuts back to the pickup truck next to the school that was covered in snow in the early morning, and the video stops abruptly with the real shot. The director deliberately arranged to show the audience the first perspective of the heroine, creating a disturbing or even weird and terrifying atmosphere through many details not only to let us understand that the plot is fantasy, but also to create a sense of oppression for the audience. Follow the heroine to come up with the idea of wanting to end it all. But from another point of view, it should be the old cleaner who wants to end all this. His mediocre and humble life is coming to an end. He wants to end his life like a "maggot pig". is over. Perhaps the imaginary award in the last paragraph was his own compliment to his own life.
I have to say that Charlie Kaufman is always able to show the inner story of the characters and convey their thoughts in unexpected ways. I had a kind of stunned feeling when the old cleaner and the girl met, and when the camera finally cut back to the snow-covered pickup I have a strong feeling in my heart. The old cleaner represents those people in this world who are wrapped in mediocre skins and have low self-esteem but have such a hot heart. Through the old cleaner, I seem to see my own heart. My heart is the same timid, humble, but eager be discovered and understood by others. This reminds me of Eason Chen's lonely patient, of course, it hasn't reached the point of NetEase Cloud (manual dog head). To sum up, I give this movie five points. It is not a rubbish work with boring dialogues and disorganized plots. It is a masterpiece that hides many details and reveals the hidden spiritual world of many people. I think a lot of people can have a stronger inner resonance after watching it once more. It is definitely a rare masterpiece.
