After watching it, my impression is "It's beautiful!"
But I can't say what's good about it. Naturally, it can't be indescribably wonderful, and it's not that it's lackluster except for new ideas and gimmicks, but it's half-toned.
There are two themes in awake, one is the untrustworthiness and misunderstanding between people. For example, the incomprehension between Clay and his mother, the pseudo-amour with Samantha, and the conspiracy of the chief surgeon and Samantha.
Another theme is undoubtedly family. In the end, the mother committed suicide and transplanted her heart to Clay, and returned the dying Clay.
These two very different themes are put together without a strong conflict or foil. One is the extreme indifference of distrust and estrangement, as Sartre thought "others are hell". Being plotted against by friends and lovers is actually a kind of objective relationship between man and the outside world, which is characterized by "I and it" as Buber said.
In the "I-it" relationship, the individual sees the external in a purely objective way, seeing it as something to be exploited and manipulated for his own ends.
At the same time, in Buber's point of view, there is also a relationship characterized by "me and you". In the "me and you" relationship, each person has his own inner world of meaning, and the "me and you" relationship is characterized by the friendship that comes from the hearts of two people. You and I are both subjects, and we sympathize, trust, and understand each other. It can be extended to the affection between Clay and his mother.
The relationship between these two types of people is clearly felt. Perhaps the main point of the film is to explore human nature. If the "me and you" relationship between people is treated as the "me and it" relationship between people and things, then human nature will be destroyed. Therefore, it is necessary to take into account the two attitudes and emotions, and express them with the same strength, so that both parties lack the power to shock and move the audience.
In terms of plot, the first half of the plot mainly expresses the relationship between Clay and Amansha, and portrays Clay's mother as an overprotective, stubborn and possessive image. However, when their image made a 180-degree change, did someone really comment on "Oh my God, I'm so shocked". . . .
Plus, that overly realistic surgery scene. Is it necessary, there is absolutely no need to be so curious.
