The Art of Storytelling - Commentary on "Huo Yuanjia"

Some movies make people feel like they are on the scene, and their mood fluctuates with the development of the plot. When they walk out of the theater after the show, they suddenly feel like returning to reality; some movies make people feel that sitting in the movie theater from beginning to end is just to listen to a movie other people's stories. "Huo" belongs to the latter. The first part of the film is about Huo Yuanjia's arrogant and arrogant fight against the invincible opponents in Tianjin. This part was supposed to pave the way, but it became the biggest failure of the film. When the director portrayed Huo Yuanjia's image, he used a single technique, too many narrations, and Li's performance was obviously too rigid. Everyone knows that storytelling is easier to move people in the first person, and too much narration and explanation will only make people feel annoying. The director was afraid that the audience would not be able to grasp Huo Yuanjia's arrogant features, so he added some scenes in the film, making the audience feel as if there was always a voice in their ears muttering, "Look, this person is such a bastard." Do you think this person is such a jerk? Obviously, it is difficult to resonate. At this point, the scene at the end of the film swept across Master Qin's concubine, and it was very successful. One scene expressed the meaning of what I wanted to say, and there was a bit of movie flavor in it.

The middle part of the film tells that Huo accidentally came to a small mountain village when his family was destroyed. But the village girl played by Sun Li doesn't know what role she is in the film, a quiet and uncontested attitude towards life? Her appearance after Huo's death at the end of the film is even more inexplicable.

In terms of time allocation, the film is a bit top-heavy, and there is too much foreshadowing in the front, and Huo Yuanjiafan then realizes that the highlight of the film is still a fight, the portrayal of Huo is not full enough, and the theme of enhancing the character image by comparing the front and rear is a little bit suspected by the director. .

As Jet Li's finale, the martial arts scene in "Huo Yuanjia" is as exciting as Li's previous films, especially the second one with Qin Ye at Guyuelou. Performed brilliantly. Although the producers hope that this remake will not only win the battle scene, but most of the audience is still rushing to Jet Li, and although there is no breakthrough in Li's acting, it is worth looking at his skills alone. I have watched some American series recently, and I feel more and more that it is much more difficult to make a good movie than a series. It is really difficult to develop from all aspects in two hours, especially for "Huo", which is positioned in both scenes and scenes. Movies with a theme. If the director, screenwriter, and actors do not have a strong comprehensive control ability, it is better not to shoot both literary and drama. This may be the main reason why this film is not very successful.
