The Battle of Midway was a famous battle in which the U.S. Navy fought more with less during World War II. Launched on June 4, 1942, the special geographical location determines the importance of its strategic position. It is an important U.S. military base and transportation hub in the Central Pacific region, as well as the gateway and outpost of the U.S. military in Hawaii. Without Midway, Pearl Harbor, home of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, would be unsafe. In the end, the U.S. military sank four Japanese heavy main aircraft carriers "Hyryu", "Soryu", "Akagi" and "Kaga" at the cost of the loss of an aircraft carrier "Yorktown". The victory of the battle deeply inspired the morale of the anti-fascist allied countries and won the victory to reverse the situation of the Pacific War.
Going back to the movie itself, this movie has a big problem with the plot. First of all, this is a straightforward movie, but there are too many things to talk about, so the focus cannot be highlighted. At the beginning, it took too much time to lay out the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Although this was the root cause of the Battle of Midway, it can only be regarded as a background story. For the Battle of Midway, the battle of Coral Island, which was very important, was touched in a single stroke.
The Battle of Coral Island was the first time that the Japanese military's military expansion was curbed, and the subsequent offensive plan had to be postponed. More importantly, the damaged Japanese aircraft carrier "Shokaku" needs to be repaired, and the heavily damaged "Shoho" needs to be rebuilt, greatly weakening Japan's strength in the upcoming Battle of Midway Island.
Therefore, the Coral Island naval battle and the information warfare of the U.S. military should be the plots that should be emphasized.
In terms of character portrayal, the acting skills of several pilots are too greasy, and the psychological journey of the characters is also obvious.
On the whole, whether it is the plot or the characters, there are too many things to talk about and too scattered, which leads to the lack of depth in all aspects and the lack of focus.
But the film is still very watchable. First of all, it is a movie suitable for all ages, you can watch it with any mood, and secondly, Hollywood blockbusters, those cool fighter flight scenes are worth the cost. If I remember correctly, this should be the first film to show dive bombers head on. The gorgeous and thrilling diving scenes, the cannonballs from the bottom up are like meteor showers, if your viewing device audio and video system is awesome, those scenes are really beautiful and shocking.
The audience may wonder, isn't the angle of the dive easier to be shot down? At this moment, I am a military blogger to explain: In fact, the larger the angle, the smaller the area of the bullet, and the harder it is to be hit by artillery fire. Without modern fire control, the hit rate of anti-aircraft guns relying on mechanical sights in the face of high-speed dive bombing is quite low, compared with low-altitude and low-speed horizontal attack torpedo aircraft.
To sum up, from a movie point of view, the plot setting of "Decisive Battle of Midway" is flawed and the character depiction is average. As a key battle to reverse the situation of World War II, this film should be of higher quality artistically. But from the viewing point of view, the battlefield is grand, the battle is gorgeous and exciting, there will be all kinds of emotions, and it is worth watching.
