Then the other role appeared. This movie started to get interesting when Maude stole a car and Harold chided her. "You should not take away people's things you know." --"While then it will send those people a reminder. They thought they have possession over things. But they are actually not. There is nothing in the world ever belong to you. "
Harold has everything born in a upper class family. But there has been something missing in his heart. What is the meaning of life? That was why he was obsessed to suicide and going to funerals.
Until he met Maude. Maude was going to be 80 years old in a few days. "If you want to sing out, sing out. If you want to be free, be free. There are millions to be, you know there are. If you want to live high, live high. If you want to live low, live low. There are millions of ways to go. You know there are. " The theme song is advocating a free and embracing attitude toward life. Life is too short to waste on worrying and self-doubting. Embrace it and say it out loud, Maude has been doing that, "LIVE", that is such a powerful combination of letters. Say it out loud with the whole heart.
Where does the whole heart come from? A scene I love is when Harold gave maude a ring engraved "Harold loves Maude" on it. She threw it into the sea. She said "then I will always know where it is."
I like this wise light shine from the old lady's face. There was a number on her arm. I knew that she must had stayed in the Nazi camp for a while. This heart is so tender and free, being one of those hearts that shines its beauty after the storms and hurts.
We do not even possess things. How could we possess people? Someone may walk into our lives; they may linger, stay or take off. There is no point thinking about it. The essence of life is not to be bonded all the time, but to live and love, and to embrace this spirit.
We should be with someone who strengthen this spirit within ourselves. Then we could heat the love inside and pass it around to others. Not necessarily to people, but to everything, even if it is a dying tree.
"I love you Maude. "
"Oh that is wonderful Harold. Go and love more! "
I can't help but bursted into tears. What a wonderful expression to answer "I love you".
I don't consider this movie as a love story though. It is two souls click with each other and emit sparks for the appreciation of lives.
