Poetry

It seems that every year in the raucous awards season, one or two such movies will sit quietly, with no twists and turns, no gorgeous stunts, just like an old man, sitting under a tree in the evening, talking about his life .

Paterson is one such movie.

The story told by this film is very ordinary and simple, an ordinary driver and his poetic world, but the theme it wraps is long and essential: people and words, life and poetry.

"Why write?"

I love seeing every answer to this question.

"For perpetuity", "for meaning", "for memory swelling"...

Borges put it lightly: “Maybe we write because we need to get rid of certain ideas.”

I think maybe we write to kill some of our lives.

I like the color treatment in the film "Frantz" very much. The reality is black and white, and only the past and touched moments rendered by emotions are colored. Life is dull and pale, and we are fully penetrated in it. And it is fierce, like the bulldog in "Paterson", we take care of it carefully, but it always pounces on it mercilessly and bites everything.

Poetry is probably the paint that renders black and white into color.

When trying to reconcile with daily trivialities, I wrote in my diary that "life is not a heroic existence". However, thinking about it now, life is trivial and hardships, and it is not a feat to give people poetry.

Feelings are not weakness without power, but a kind of resistance, a kind of advance, tenacious and fearless.

Like the male protagonist in the film, everyone probably has a secret corner against the daily grind. It's just a few words written down, it's a melody that floats with you when you walk alone on the road, and it's a few episodes and chapters of a book before going to bed.

Those are the edges and corners that we have worked hard to polish in the perfect circle of life, and the clusters of fire ignited in a vast ice field. Small but romantic, futile but warm.

If there is no sea, even if there is no sea, in a quiet pool, let's be a free-swimming fish.

To feel, to create, to go, to live.

It should be a poem, and it will make waves.

The repetition and contrast in the narrative structure constructed by Jarmusch in the film show the daily life of this ordinary bus driver. This repetition and contrast is an inspection of life in the time dimension. In this inspection, Poetry hobbies, daily work, conversations with passersby, and the communication and trivia between husband and wife are all full of delicate and real life texture. Long-lasting love and happiness need time and patience to nurture slowly, and life is the same

Paterson quotes

  • Doc: Paterson, you still don't got a cell phone?

Paterson: Uh, no. No, I don't want one. It would be a leash.

Doc: What about the better half, she got one?

Paterson: She's got one, yeah. And the laptop, and an iPad...

Doc: She doesn't want you to get one?

Paterson: No. She's okay about it. She understands me really well.

    Doc: [mutters] A lucky guy.

  • Laura: You're up late, honey. Your silent magic watch didn't wake you up.

Paterson: Yeah, it was a little late today.

Laura: Well, somedays something inside just doesn't want to get up. Ever feel like that?

    Paterson: Today.
