The character of Danielle looks smart and beautiful. She wisely thinks that she can see through Clayton's thoughts, and she simply thinks that she can understand all the facts and cause and effect. In fact, she also has the frivolity and innocence unique to her youth. At the end, Clayton's change was not abrupt, but a realization that he couldn't give Danielle what she wanted. What he wants is self-redemption. And what Danielle needs is to experience the life she deserves.
Rory is the shadow of thousands of ordinary people, a great young man with dreams and pursuits, who is unwilling to abandon his ideals to drain his youth, and wants to be an enviable warrior who realizes his dreams. All three authors in the movie are dealing with certain kinds of losses. He may lost his marriage, or he may lose his honesty and innocence, or he may lose his ability to write. They are all stuck in the fucking life they have brought themselves in. They all want to find their ways out, However, life is not fiction, no matter how much they are alike, they'll never touch.
