What is so good about "Pulp Fiction"? It is indeed good in its "ring structure" and "multi-angle", but what is "ring structure" and "multi-angle" and what is the beauty of the two?
The so-called "circular structure" may be relatively easy to understand, that is, each paragraph in the film does not distinguish the beginning and the end, the complementary structure, the beginning and the end are connected, and so on. This kind of structure, used by the director to imply violent stories in this movie, is repeated and constantly appearing. That is to say, in reality, the plots in similar movies are always happening and never stop.
The so-called "multi-angle", in addition to observing the same event from different angles, is more to show the changes in the role of people in different environments and states. At this point, Tarantino's views are more like Jacques Derrida (the master of deconstructivism philosophy) in the film industry.
According to a few examples: Vincent, as the male protagonist in "Xiangyan Story", is a protector compared to Mia (Uma Thurman) in the story, which can be said to be a quite positive role. But in "The Boxer's Story", Vincent became an unknown person who was shot and killed after only showing up. If you look at these two stories separately, there is no doubt that Vincent's role is very different in the two stories.
Another example: Jules (Samuel Jackson), when shooting people in the apartment with Vincent, there is no doubt that his image is a "killer", but in the back of the film, Bonnie and Pumpkin Head Robbery At the restaurant, it was obvious that Julius’ image was no longer a “killer” but a savior.
Such "multiple angles" are undoubtedly telling us that each participant in an event has its own reasons for participating in the event and its own state, and the same person in different times and states, Their roles are also very different.
The dialogue and performance of the film are certainly wonderful, but I personally think that the ingenuity and profound meaning of the structure is what makes "Pulp Fiction" wonderful.
