Catherine, the heroine of the film, is a new teacher just out of the cottage. With great passion and enthusiasm, she comes to Wesley Women’s school. She is eager to reform this school by breaking the axe. In her opinion, she thinks the rules and ways of the school is abnormal. She thinks women can keep a balance between family and study, and women should not be trapped at home. Therefore, she encourages the student Jone to pursue her studies. However, contrary to her wishes, Joan made her own decision and didn’t tell her. Catherine was shocked and chose to respect and blessing finally. At the end of the movie, many students who used to disagree with her made different choices under her influence, and they eventually smiled from their heart. Catherine, undoubtedly, is bold and avant-garde. But to some extent, she always looks at the choices of students from her perspective. However,it can’t be said that it’s anyone’s fault. Everyone has different educational background and living environment. As a teacher, she should respect everyone. The mind of a person can’t be changed easily. But in any case, our society has become more and more inclusive, more and more enlightened because of many human beings like Catherine.

Some superficial contradictions are not incompatible with each other. Life is like drinking water and knowing it is warm and cold. Sometimes it is women who really oppress women.

"Is she smiling? Is she happy?" Women are pursuing the topic of freedom and equality, and they don't know when it will truly become obsolete. The hostess is really beautiful, I like it very much!

Mona Lisa Smile quotes

  • [about Charlie Stewart]

Connie Baker: We spent last weekend at the Cape! A little hideaway he knew about.

Betty Warren: Operative word, 'hide'. Men take women to the Cape in the winter when they're embarrassed to be seen with them. He's using you.

Giselle Levy: He's not using you if you want to go. Come here, don't listen to her.

Betty Warren: I love you, and I swear I'm not saying this to hurt you. Charlie's promised to Deb McIntyre. She wears his pin. Giselle, you know it's true.

Giselle Levy: I don't know anything about a pin.

Connie Baker: Are her parents named Phillip and Vanessa?

    Betty Warren: You know them?

Connie Baker: Only from a distance.

  • Betty Warren: Have you seen Spencer?

Connie Baker: [in tears] No. But I did see Charlie Stewart. And he told me that he and Deb broke up last summer. And you told me that they were together when he invited me to the Cape.

Betty Warren: Oh Connie, I don't keep track of his dates. They've been on-again, off-again for the past few years.

Connie Baker: No, no apparently they've been off-again for a while. For quite a while.

    Betty Warren: So?

Connie Baker: So you made me believe that he was hiding me! Either way, why couldn't you let me be happy?
