Huang Lei vs Rene Liu: Those I can't say, the music expresses for me

Everything has to start with the TV series "Times Like Water".

At that time, Huang Lei was not Huang Xiaochu, just in his 30s, a proper young man of literature and art, without a trace of greasy. The milk tea at that time, unmarried, was as quiet and fragrant and intriguing.

In the play, Wen (played by Huang Lei) and Ying (played by Liu Ruoying), because of an encounter in Wuzhen, had a similar feeling of love for each other, but neither of them could be sure.

Before leaving, Ying gave Wen a CD "The Pianist and Her Lover". Wen couldn't wait to buy a CD Walkman, put the CD in the player, and the sound of the piano was like water. . At that moment, he made clear his feelings for Ying, and also understood the unspoken words in Ying's heart.

In fact, this CD is the soundtrack album of the movie "The Piano".

In the film, Ada (Holly Hunter) cannot speak because she was stimulated since she was a child. All her thoughts and emotions flowed out with the wonderful piano music. Her husband died young, and she was forced to take her daughter to New Zealand to remarry Stuart, a local colonist.

When they got to the beach in New Zealand, the new husband thought it was troublesome to carry the piano and wanted to throw it on the beach. Aida played the piano frantically against the sea by the beach, venting her inner dissatisfaction and anguish. I still remember when I was so shocked when I watched this scene, the daughter beside her was dancing on the beach like an angel with her shoes, the beauty was suffocating.

Neighbor Bein (Harvey Keitel) heard Ada's inner anguish, so she exchanged 80 acres of land with Stewart for a piano, and asked Ada to come to his house every day to teach him how to play the piano, and promised to teach him how to play the piano every day. One key can be exchanged for one lesson. Ada readily agreed. Bein fell in love with Aida, and through each piano lesson, the relationship between the two gradually grew.

Later, Aida would rather have her finger cut off by her husband, and still choose to be with Bein, an indigenous person who understands her, and the power of love has awakened the words in her dusty mouth, and she can speak.

This touching film, both artistically and commercially successful: it won the Palme d'Or at Cannes that year. Holly Hunter's wonderful performance won her Cannes and Oscar in one fell swoop. Anna Paiquin, who was only 11 years old, also won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.

The great success of the film is inseparable from the album "The Pianist and Her Lover".

It was completed by the British classical composer Michael Nyman . Because piano music is not only an important means for the mute heroine to express her emotions, but also a witness and supporter for her to break free and gain freedom and happiness. It intensifies the contradictions between the people in the play and also promotes the development of the story itself.

The first piece of piano music at the beginning of the film, " Big My Secret ", begins with a very simple orchestral music, repeats the piano melody, and then ends abruptly.

It may be a bit monotonous at first listening, but if you match it with the scene in the play: the distant seaside sky is slightly gray, turbulent waves wash the beach from time to time, a piano stands alone, the mother plays ecstatically, and the daughter dances happily.. ....simple black and white keys hide all her secrets.

The next piano piece, " The Heart Asks Pleasure First ", is the movie's theme soundtrack and one of my favorite pieces of music on this album. Reminds me of the poem "The Soul Chooses Its Mate" by the American poet Emily Dickinson.

The soul chooses her mate and closes the gates No one can break into her sacred realm

The dexterous and brisk melody hides an inexplicable sense of tension. Aida's seemingly calm and indifferent exterior hides a fiery heart, trying to break through the cage again and again, in order to seek absolute spiritual independence, she is desperate. persistence and determination. Not to be free, but rather to be destroyed.

Later, this piece of music was adapted into "Undercurrent" by Hong Kong Chen Huiyang, Lin Xi wrote the lyrics, and was sung by Faye Wong. (However, the best interpretation of "Undercurrent" is Huang Yaoming. For some reason, this version cannot be found now.)

The third section of the piano " the scent of love " has been very quiet and forbearing in the front, and the latter section is soaring, as if countless contradictions have accumulated, and finally broke out. It refers to two thrilling struggles and pursuits. It gradually eased in the end, symbolizing that after struggling and achieving spiritual independence, Aida finally reconciled with reality.

Although the album failed to receive a nomination along with the film, it has been recognized as a masterpiece.

Music is another expression of the mute heroine, the fiery emotions buried and her incomparable love for the music she regards as life.

The Piano quotes

  • Ada: I have told you the story of your father many many times.

Flora: Oh, tell me again! Was he a teacher?

    Ada: Yes.

Flora: How did you speak to him?

Ada: I didn't need to speak. I could lay thoughts out in his mind like they were a sheet.

Flora: Why didn't you get married?

Ada: He became frightened and stopped listening.

  • [first lines]

Ada: The voice you hear is not my speaking voice - -but my mind's voice. I have not spoken since I was six years old. No one knows why - -not even me. My father says it is a dark talent, and the day I take it into my head to stop breathing will be my last. Today he married me to a man I have not yet met. Soon my daughter and I shall join him in his own country. My husband writes that my muteness does not bother him - and hark this! He says, "God loves dumb creatures, so why not I?" 'Twere good he had God's patience, for silence affects everyone in the end. The strange thing is, I don't think myself silent. That is because of my piano. I shall miss it on the journey.
