After watching Netflix's new World War II movie "Grey Hound", I felt it was not enjoyable. It was too short. It was said to be 90 minutes, and those without the subtitles were only 80 minutes, so I turned out the original novel and read it again. This movie is based on the novel "The Good Sheperd" by British author CS Forester. After reading the novel, some details can be better understood. When I think of where I wrote it, I can summarize a few points:
1. In the novel, there is no scene where the captain and his wife meet and give gifts at the beginning, but it is gradually revealed in the story that after the protagonist and his wife got married, the relationship was not good, and the wife had an affair. He always wanted to save the marriage. It can be seen that the captain is a very conservative person.
2. Captain Krause is a devout Christian. In the description of his inner activities, he constantly quotes the words of the Bible, which is clearly shown in the movie.
3. Slippers and the uneaten breakfast are important props in the movie. These two props are actually saying that the anti-submarine warfare lasts for a long time. The captain does not eat or drink for more than 20 consecutive hours, and there is no chance to sit down, so In the end, the foot bleeds. The performance of the movie is very good, otherwise it would not have been possible to write about the captain's exhaustion and suffering like in the book.
4. The original work was written in 1955. At that time, it was not as politically correct as it is now, so there was no black cook. The Mess boy (orderman) in the original work was a Filipino and was not killed in battle. This adaptation of the film conforms to the times, which is understandable. There is also a paragraph in the original work of Burial at Sea, but it is very brief, because it is impossible to delay too long in the battle, and it must be carried out at an extremely fast speed. The movie is so emotional, I almost cried when I watched it.
5. At the climax at the end of the film, the anti-submarine aircraft dropped bombs on the submarine. This is also different from the original work. After a fierce fight, one of the four escort ships was sunk, and the depth charges of the remaining three were all. They were all cast, but the submarines were also sunk and defeated. Then they continued on their way and received encrypted telegrams notifying that the corresponding fleet was coming, and soon saw the receiving fleet and planes. It was relatively bland, and the adaptation of the movie More compact and good rhythm.
6. In the original book, the protagonist's growth is also explained. He graduated from the Naval Academy, and his promotion was slow. If it wasn't for the war, he should retire. He is average in school, and his only specialty is fencing! It's interesting that he thinks of the fencing game many times during the battle with the enemy submarine.
7. The original book has a lot of descriptions in the heart, which is a little dull. Captain Krause is a very delicate person. He can think about a lot of things, such as the attitude of his subordinates when he gives orders, and the phone calls with his fellow fleets. The performance can only be conveyed through figurative performances and plots, and it should be said to be very successful.
In general, the movie is better than the original, and the story rhythm and actors perform well. In my impression, this is also the first film to show anti-submarine combat from the perspective of a warship. The characters' passwords and scene props in the play are very professional. The original author is in There is also a glossary of professional terms at the end of the book. The professionalism of European and American military writers, including Tom Clancy, is still admirable. There is no unreasonable nonsense, and there will never be low-level mistakes that laymen can see through gangs. . The Chinese version of the novel is said to be out recently. Those who don't want to read the English version can wait a while. It's worth reading, and it's not too long.
