When this film won the Oscar that year, I happened to be in Florence while taking an Italian film class. The professor was also an Italian director. I knew the director many years ago. Before the Oscar, I was very excited to tell us that he thought this film would definitely win an award no matter what. Prizes should be organized for all of us to see. I watched this film for almost two and a half hours in a theater in Florence without English subtitles, and was deeply impressed by the director's lens language and film aesthetics. The feeling of being amazed by the sights all over Italy that year was rekindled in Rome, where the film was filmed. The photos limit the beauty of Rome, but the director's lens really perfectly reproduces that magnificent yet tender and delicate beauty.
