The film is adapted from the novel of the same name by the British female writer Charlotte Bronte. It tells the story of a British woman who became an orphan from a young age, who constantly pursues freedom and dignity in all kinds of hardships, insists on herself, and finally achieves happiness.
Jane Eyre was an orphan. Because her parents died of illness, the young Jane Eyre was adopted by her uncle. After her uncle Mr. Reed died, she was discriminated against and abused by her aunt's family. In the end, her aunt sent her to the Lowood Orphanage. Jane Eyre was tortured both physically and spiritually.
Due to the poor living conditions, children often died in the orphanage, and her best friend Helen died of tuberculosis. The orphanage was also greatly improved after Helen's death. Although Jane Eyre loves Rochester deeply, she does not want to be someone else's mistress. After experiencing painful inner struggles, she resolutely decides to run away. Jane Eyre left Thornfield Manor late at night.
Jane Eyre was penniless on the way, fainted in the stormy night, and was finally taken in by the St. John brothers and sisters in Moore Manor. After Jane Eyre recovered, she taught in a rural primary school under the introduction of St. John. St. John admired Jane Eyre's character, thought she was very suitable to be a missionary's wife, proposed to her and hoped to go to India with her to mission, but Jane Eyre rejected the marriage without love.
Jane Eyre was obsessed with Rochester and decided to return to Thornfield Manor to visit Rochester secretly. At this time, Rochester's wife burned down the manor and fell to her death. Rochester became disabled because of saving her. But Jane Eyre ended up living happily with Rochester.
