A Simple Review

Perhaps the most difficult film I've ever seen. The structure and the style are fascinating. Because I didn't see the introduction thoroughly, I was given the chance to enjoy the story itself at first without realizing that it's a unique and revolutionary film ! But before long, the film spoke for itself. Like I said, it's an obscure and complicated film, enough to confuse you. So there are some parts of the film which I couldn't understand, maybe will be for a long time. For example, the Ellen guy and the homosexuality thing are particularly intriguing. There was a name "Eric" mentioned, and later on one guy named Eric did show up. And Ellen was supposed to be a female, if I remember it correctly. So maybe there's a connection between the little girl in Ellen's dream and the criticism about Caden being gay,because clearly there's a close relation between Ellen and Caden. Ellen is probably a figure to symbolize Caden's feminine side. Or maybe, it's just a mistaken comprehension because I got so confused with those names and recalled them wrong. I love the final scene deeply. The movie told us a lot about loneliness, agony, mistrust and regret. It kept warning us of death and mocking our futile endeavour. But as a work created by human, it was touched itself, and couldn't help showing us lost souls some comfort and care. So, in the end, it sent Caden, this bitterly hurt creature, back to the warm cuddle of his mom. People live and die, they suffer during their living days. But they should be treated with a moment of peace at their last minutes. Synecdoche, perhaps not as bad as "the obscure moon lighting the obscure world",is still a difficult and inpalpable name. The film was filled with personal expressions, vague concepts and ambiguous phenomena. It barely explained. But when it did, the whole narration tended to be somewhat unnatural and artistic. In my perspective, it seems like the vague film led us to take efforts most of the time to get to touch the things underlying, so it became hard and abrupt when it tried to summarize and tell something more directly. I guess for a film, telling surely performs a lot weaker than pure persuasive images. It is certainly not a perfect film. But it's distinguished, bold, creative, and therefore outstanding.
